Two words zip through tech newsrooms every January like the electrical signals pulsing in a PC: “CES Flu,” shorthand for the cold you caught after a week spent interacting with 150,000 tech enthusiasts from around the globe at the industry's annual expo in Las Vegas. But the term took on new meaning in 2020, when the world’s biggest tech trade show was fingered as a superspreader event for Covid-19.

CES 2021 was cancelled due to Covid, but with the world having started to open up, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) – the trade group behind the show – announced that CES 2022 would be back on the ground in Sin City. However, with the virulent new Omicron variant of Covid posing a new and possibly unique threat, will the CTA hit 'Go' on CES?

“The safety of our participants and partners is a top priority,” Jamie Kaplan, a spokeswoman for the CTA, told TechRadar. “We are actively tracking the emerging news and science around the new Omicron variant and continue to follow guidance from the CDC [the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and WHO, as well as relevant federal, state, and local government requirements. While it is too early to determine the impact of this latest variant, we will continue to monitor and adjust our plans and health protocols as necessary.”

Too early for the CTA, perhaps. But the tech industry is watching – and it’s not thrilled.

A smaller CES for 2022

At the kick-off event for CES 2022 in New York City in November, CTA president Gary Shapiro admitted bluntly that the event would be smaller than in past years: “Let’s be honest: It will have a smaller footprint, and it will be fewer people. COVID is keeping some people home,” he said.

But will Omicron keep yet more people home? Over the last few days, as governments have instituted harsh quarantines and banned travelers from South Africa, where the variant was first detected, worries are growing. Consumer electronics giant LG announced on Monday that it planned a robust virtual presence for 2022, rather than attending in person – but it told TechRadar the change had nothing to do Omicron.

"LG's corporate decision to approach participation in CES 2022 in a robust but different way occurred prior to the Omicron concerns that are now gaining global attention,” Chris De Maria, spokesman for LG, told us. “Renewed international travel challenges reaffirm the importance of engaging in a variety of ways with our key constituents – customers, consumers, partners and press – both onsite and digitally to experience LG's 2022 innovations in the way that best meets their needs."

Embracing virtual is key to the modern trade show, but will the old format exist at all for CES 2022? Some attendees seem skeptical.

“JLab Audio will still attending but we expect multiple in-person meetings to be cancelled,” Win Cramer, CEO of the consumer audio company, told us. Cramer plans a smaller team at the show than in pre-pandemic years – for now, anyway. “We're sending a fully vaxxed skeleton crew – the same crew that was scheduled to go pre-Omicron.”

Others are bluntly pessimistic. “I cannot imagine attending in person this year,” Dan Ness, founder of market research firm MetaFacts, said. “I expect we’ll hear exhibitors providing virtual alternatives, while others will blindly press ahead in real life.”

Health Protocols for your protection

The CTA does have comprehensive health protocols in place to minimize the spread of disease at the show, of course. Attendees must show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, chairs will be spaced further apart during panels and press conferences, and even the width of many aisles will be increased -- partly due to the decreased number of vendors showing their wares.

And for 2022, the show was already planning to look different: The Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Hall is traditionally awash in computing components and drones and wireless charging dongles; this year it will be closed entirely. And a brand new wing of the Las Vegas Convention Center, dubbed the West Wing, will be unveiled, a home for the automobiles -- self driving and otherwise -- that have cropped up in recent years.

But with the show about a month off, and important questions about virility, deadliness, and the efficacy of current vaccines surrounding Omicron, the question marks around the show grow.

Meanwhile, the first case of infection by Omicron was reported in the United States on Wednesday. It is unlikely to be the last.

Cryptocurrencies have been on everyone’s lips and for good reason. They can generate lucrative rewards, especially when used correctly. When it comes to these crypto-assets, minimising risk and optimising results is a great way to summarise the services of Koinexpert — a company that’s mastered the system so that you don’t have to.

Using the Arbitrage Principle and their innovative {automated} trading system, Koinexpert Arbitrage Services or KAS is revolutionising how South Africans trade and make a profit.

What is arbitrage trading?

Koinexpert

The term has been around for some time and is a common trading strategy that maximises the advantage of price differences in different markets for the same asset.

Once an asset is purchased on one market, it is then sold on another for a profit.

This strategy lies at the foundation of Koinexpert’s technology. It allows for the buying and selling of crypto, minimising risk and ensuring that clients receive maximum profits for minimum effort, with a number of happy clients attesting to this via their testimonials.

Why use Koinexpert and not just trade yourself?

Koinexpert minimises client risk and maximises their profits by offering trusted and state-of-the-art software that monitors multiple exchanges and numerous trading pairs 24/7.

The system keeps a digital eye out for the highest arbitrage opportunities and then utilises it while it’s hot. Koinexpert offers traders a level of accuracy and urgency that goes beyond a general understanding of the market.

Along with adding  a few extra coins to your pocket, here are two more benefits of using Koinexpert:

LOW FEES: Koinexpert’s technology pools client funds and trades this through the arbitrage principle. These large volume sizes and constant optimisation through their system ensures that clients receive the lowest fees, providing an opportunity to make a larger profit. The company does take a service fee on profits made, but clients will never be charged in the very unlikely event that a loss occurs.

BEST RATES: Having cultivated strong relationships with banking partners, exchanges, and forex intermediaries, clients are able to receive the best forex transaction fees and the highest fee discount tier level at all relevant exchanges

So, just how much can you make?

Clients looking to fatten their pockets and do some extra shopping this Chritsmas have a chance to do so with Koinexpert and their daily average (over a 90-day period) of around 1.5%, AFTER all, fees are deducted! Results are updated on Koinexpert’s website daily.

What does this value mean?  Let’s assume a client trades with an average of R200 000 per trade in 2021 and they’ve traded their entire 11 million worth of yearly allowances. They could have made a staggering R165 000 profit.

That’s a staggering return of 82.5% on their capital of R200 000 which is more than double what the best Unit Trust returned YTD, as per investonline.co.za

What are the requirements?

Those looking to dive into the world of arbitrage trading with Koinexpert will need a minimum of R100 000 as capital, will need to be a South African citizen and have a good standing tax compliance status with SARS before starting this exciting journey.

Once the daily trades are complete, initial capital and profits are returned to every client. No waiting periods. Clients can then decide to continue trading or not.

Reproductive healthcare non-profit Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (PPLA) has suffered a ransomware attack that exposed the personally identifiable information of hundreds of thousands of patients.

The organization recently notified its patients that a breach had occurred between October 9 and 17, during which a database with information on 400,000 users was stolen. According to the announcement, the company has taken the usual steps to minimize the damage.

"On October 17, we identified suspicious activity on our computer network. We immediately took our systems offline, notified law enforcement, and a third-party cybersecurity firm was engaged to assist in our investigation," explained PPLA.

"The investigation determined that an unauthorized person gained access to our network between October 9, 2021 and October 17, 2021, and exfiltrated some files from our systems during that time."

The crooks made away with sensitive patient data, including addresses, insurance information, birth dates, and clinical information, the organization confirmed.

The identity of the ransomware group responsible for the attack has not been disclosed.

Ransomware, data theft, DDoS, threats

Ransomware attacks are usually a multi-step process. First, employees are targeted with phishing, spear-phishing or social engineering attacks that, if successful, provide attackers with login credentials for the organization's network.

The malicious actors often lurk within the target network for weeks, identifying and slowly extracting sensitive data. Only once enough sensitive data has been extracted do the criminals deploy actual ransomware and encrypt the data on the target network.

A ransom is then demanded from the victim, usually in cryptocurrency, in exchange for the decryption key. Given that more and more companies have started deploying backups to combat ransomware, crooks also threaten to release the data online, if their demands are not swiftly met.

These threats are often paired with Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, and phone threats, as well.

Vivaldi has brought a new stack of features to its eponymous challenger browser, Vivaldi browser. The fifth iteration of the browser brings theme sharing to the fore as well as Vivaldi Translate, one that doesn’t use Microsoft or Google technologies and will live in a dedicated Translate panel on the desktop browser.

Vivaldi on Android will get two-level tab stacks for extreme browser users, while Chromebooks/tablet users will get a side panel to optimize screen space better. The browser has historically shunned many of the tracking and data collections techniques used by rivals as it aspires to be one of the  best browsers for privacy and anonymity

Is Vivaldi VPN next?

Speaking of which, a source close to Vivaldi has confirmed to TechRadar Pro that they are actively looking for the right partners to launch their own VPN service, one which is likely to cost nothing given that Opera, which was founded by Vivaldi’s CEO Jon von Tetzchner, has integrated a free VPN in its browser for several years.

Our source cheekily added: “You never say never, we may come up with our own solution, just the way we've got Mail, Calendar, Feeds (in beta currently). Having our own VPN is not trivial so it would be premature to make a headline of sorts. But yes, we are looking at potential partners.”

Mozilla went the other way by having Mozilla VPN that sits alongside its popular Firefox browser as a paid for service. Safari developer Apple, on the other hand, offers a Privacy Relay, which is similar to a VPN Lite service as part of iCloud+ subscription.

Google Chrome doesn’t have any VPN attached to it although Google has started to roll one as part of its Google One subscription. That leaves Microsoft as the only big browser outfit without a consumer facing VPN or privacy product but for how long.

Potentially major spoilers follow for Hawkeye episode 3.

Hawkeye episode 3 has landed on Disney Plus – and it seems that the Marvel Phase 4 TV series may have already revealed its big secret.

The show is now halfway through its six-episode run and, ordinarily, MCU projects don't tend to reveal their major surprises until their second half. A couple of key scenes and lines of dialog in Hawkeye episode 3, though, appear to have given the game away already.

We're about to dive into potentially major spoilers for Hawkeye episode 3. If you're not caught up on the series yet, don't read past the image below.

Clint Barton LARPing in Hawkeye episode 2

(Image credit: Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. © Marvel Studios 2021. )

Hawkeye episode 3's opening scenes follow Maya Lopez, aka Echo, as a child before she becomes the skilled fighter that we see in the show's third entry. During her childhood, Echo learns martial arts to help toughen her up – and it's here that Hawkeye's TV show makes its big play sooner than expected.

William Lopez, Maya's father, has to head off to work and leaves Maya in the capable hands of her 'uncle'. We see someone in an all-black suit appear, before he chuckles and gives Maya a gentle tug on her cheek. You can see the very brief scene in the tweet below. Maya's 'uncle' is also referenced on a couple of other occasions later in the episode, but their identity remains hidden.

Or does it? If you read between the lines, or know your Marvel comic history, you'll know exactly who Maya's 'uncle' is: it's none other than Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.

Hawkeye episode 3: Wilson Fisk's history with Echo explained

Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Netflix's Daredevil TV series

Wait, how do we know this? Well, for one, it's a callback to Echo's comic-book roots. In the source material, Echo's father is a secretly a mob enforcer for Kingpin and, after he's killed during a mission, Echo is raised by Fisk to become his most trusted lieutenant. That is, before she turns on him after Daredevil reveals that Kingpin has been lying to her.

As we see in Hawkeye episode 3, Echo's dad is also employed by Kingpin. He's wearing a red tracksuit before he leaves, which is exactly the same one that's worn by the Tracksuit Mafia in Hawkeye's TV show, as well as in Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye comic series run.

Echo's dad's death is altered slightly for this live-action interpretation, though. In the MCU, he's killed by Ronin – Clint Barton's alter-ego, who goes on a killing rampage after his family are snapped out of existence by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame. Echo's father even leaves a blood handprint on Echo's face during this scene as he dies, which is eerily similar to his death in Marvel's comics.

But we digress. Anyway, it seems that Fisk trains Echo to become the expert fighter that she is in the MCU, which is true of her comic book counterpart, too. And it also appears that she becomes his second-in-command in the MCU, given that Clint tells Kate Bishop that Echo reports to someone else later in episode 3.

Kingpin's MCU debut in Hawkeye has been a rumor for some time now, too. As we reported recently, Vincent D'Onofrio (who portrayed Kingpin in Netflix's Daredevil TV series) has seemingly teased his involvement in Hawkeye for a number of months.

This has only served to increase fans' hype for the fan-favorite character's MCU arrival, which has been heightened by rumors that Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Kingpin and Daredevil are also said to be involved in Echo's own Disney Plus show, which is currently being developed by Marvel Studios.

Trinh Tran, one of Hawkeye's executive producers, almost confirmed that Fisk may be revealed in Hawkeye episode 4 or 5, too. In a recent interview, Tran appears to mouth the word "four" or "five" before stopping herself from revealing which episode Fisk may appear in:

So long story short? Hawkeye episode 3 has already revealed that Wilson Fisk/Kingpin is part of the show's cast, and that he'll finally make his MCU debut in episode 4 or 5. We suspect that he'll survive the events of Hawkeye as well, and that he'll be the primary antagonist in Echo's own Disney Plus show.

Regardless of whether he turns up next week or the week after, we'll be delighted to see D'Onofrio reprise his role as Kingpin, as will plenty of other MCU fans, judging by this Reddit thread. Roll on the next week's episode of Hawkeye, we say.

Italian company Noko has unveiled a trio of new e-bikes that it claims can keep running for up to 200km (or 124 miles). That's not the greatest range of any e-bike (the WAU Bike, for example, can run for up to 215 miles with its extra power pack fitted), but Noko's bikes will also be exceptionally light, making them far more practical for commuting and storage.

While the WAU tips the scales at a hefty 22kg before you clip on its battery, Noko claims that its new bikes will weigh a mere 14.8kg.

That would make them light for any e-bike, let alone a long range one. For context, our current top-rated bike, the Cowboy 4, has a top range of 43.5 miles and weighs between 18.9kg and 19.2kg. The lightest bike in our list, the Ribble Hybrid Al e, weighs a mere 13.1kg, and a maximum range of 60 miles.

A light touch

As eBikeTips reports, the three models in Noko's new lineup are the Forza, Tempo, and Vulcano.

Much like the Cowboy 4, the Forza and Tempo are road bikes with a carbon drive belt rather than a chain (a handy way to reduce maintenance). The Forza has a step-over frame, while the Tempo is step-through. Both bike start at €3,990 (about $4,500 / £3,400 / AU$6,300).

Close-up of the power button on the Noko Foza e-bike

The Vulcano is a slightly more rugged affair, with a drive chain and drop handlebars, not entirely dissimilar to the Ribble CGR Al E electric gravel bike. Its price starts at €4,350 (about $4,900 / £3,700 / AU$6,900).

All bikes come in a choice of colors and three sizes; a welcome surprise since many e-bikes are only available with a single frame option that limits their accessibility. They are available to pre-order now for delivery next year.

Analysis: going the distance

So will Noko's new bikes actually keep going for a full 200km? Probably not - but it depends on the conditions and how you ride them.

In the US, riders are sometimes disappointed to find that the quoted maximum range is based on pedal assistance, and is much shorter than can be achieved using the throttle alone. Due to EU laws on e-bikes, the Forza, Tempo, and Vulcano will have no throttles, and their motors will only engage while you're pedaling. If you put in more work yourself, and use the lowest of the five assistance settings, you'll eke out a greater range.

Environmental factors are important too, and the top range will only be achievable ideal conditions. Factors like road condition, wind, the combined weight of you and your luggage, and even your clothing choices can all have an impact on real world performance.

You'll need to keep the tires optimally pressurized, too; flat tires mean more resistance on the road, which can be easily missed as the motor compensates for the decreased efficiency.

However, unless a manufacturer goes out of its way to specify that its figures are based on real-world performance (as Juiced Bikes does), these same limitations will always apply. Even if you can't keep rolling for a full 200km on one of Noko's new bikes, range should still be much greater than others in the same weight category.

Razer has announced that its next-gen gaming laptops coming out in 2022 will be more expensive than current models.

The bad news was delivered by the CEO of Razer, Min-Liang Tan, who tweeted to warn would-be buyers that there have been ‘significant increases’ in the cost of hardware components that go in these notebooks, so price hikes would be necessary due to that.

As noted, the more expensive price tags will be applied to gaming laptops across the entire Razer range.

As VideoCardz, which spotted this tweet, points out, pricing for Razer’s core Blade gaming portables already starts at $1,800 for the Blade 15 (though the US store suggests pricing starts from $1,700, we can’t see a model with that tag). As a caveat, there are currently a couple of Blade Stealth 13 models which have been price-cut to below this and as low as $1,300 on the US store (but that’s temporary discounted pricing).

The flagship Blade 17 (with a 4K touchscreen) weighs in at an eye-watering $3,700 in the US. In the UK, the Blade price range is from £2,150 (again with temporary discounts going down to £1,450 as a caveat) through to £3,000 (not including the Studio model, of course, which isn’t a consumer machine).

Analysis: Prepare your wallet for the worst – or buy a current-gen model now

Razer’s next-gen gaming laptops will be loaded up with Alder Lake mobile processors or AMD ‘Rembrandt’ APUs (Zen 3+, Ryzen 6000), plus new laptop GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, with the latter rumored to include a mobile version of the RTX 3080 Ti. The use of DDR5 RAM is another possibility for pushing prices up, as it’s very expensive in its initial incarnation.

It’s not difficult to imagine how costly pairing one of those cutting-edge CPUs with an RTX 3080 Ti might be, even before the price increase Razer’s CEO is talking about – driven by the global chip shortage, which has no end remotely in sight – is factored in. Clearly, prices are going to exceed the $4,000 mark, and maybe even start creeping up towards the £4,000 mark in the UK, and you’ll be wise to prepare your wallet for the worst if you’re planning on buying a next-gen portable from Razer.

Reaction on Twitter has been predictably displeased, although at least some commenters have given kudos to Razer for at least being transparent on the pricing situation. The announcement may, of course, lead to some folks pulling the trigger now rather than waiting, if they want a Razer Blade for a more affordable (relatively speaking) outlay.

The latest Oculus Quest 2 update brings mixed reality casting to the VR headset, effectively allowing you to film yourself in a virtual re...

The latest Oculus Quest 2 update brings mixed reality casting to the VR headset, effectively allowing you to film yourself in a virtual reality space. So far just six of the best VR games are compatible – like Beat Saber and Pistol Whip – but the new feature is able to quite convincingly film you superimposed over the game you're playing.

As reported by RoadToVR, this new Quest and Quest 2 feature is unfortunately only compatible with Apple handsets, specifically the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, SE (2nd gen), and the full iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ranges. So you'll have to own one of Apple's flagship phones in order to try out mixed reality casting.

There's currently no word on whether or not the feature will make its way to Android phones in future, but we certainly hope it does.

Frequent Oculus Quest users may remember a similar feature by the name of Live Overlay, which could also place an image of the player in-game, in place of the usual avatar. However, the new mixed reality casting differs in that it better integrates the player into the game – though that increased complexity is likely why the feature is only available in six games right now.

Mixed reality casting isn't the only feature added in the latest v35 update, either. It's joined by global cloud saves, a much-needed feature that will automatically backup your Oculus Quest 2 game save files. Need to uninstall Resident Evil 4 VR for something else? Worry not, as your saves will be stored in the cloud for later retrieval.

Another new arrival is the addition of voice calls to the Facebook Messenger app for Oculus Quest devices. You may not see this feature right away, though, as Meta has confirmed it'll be rolling out "over the coming weeks," so don't be surprised if the feature doesn't launch immediately alongside the new update.

Analysis: Do we need mixed reality casting?

Oculus Quest 2's new mixed reality casting feature, as you can see in the video above, isn't perfect. It's easy to spot choppy outlines around the player, made all the more apparent by a supremely kinetic game like Beat Saber.

However, the addition of the feature is a net plus, overall. Similar setups can be achieved with expensive, complex green screen setups. But we'd wager that most Oculus Quest 2 users won't have the resources (or the room) to make this a reality. Instead, having a much easier solution baked into the VR headset is a fantastic alternative.

So, who stands to gain? For one, smaller content creators who dabble in VR have a whole new feature to play with. Having a second person operating the phone camera to capture the event could lead to some pretty creative entertainment, all without having to spend a penny extra on a professional setup.

Our only real complaint would be that we'd love to see mixed reality casting apply to more Oculus Quest 2 games in future, particularly the aforementioned Resident Evil 4 VR, or other horror games like Edge of Nowhere or Dreadhalls.

Update v35 has rolled around at just the right time, too, as we've just seen some pretty good Cyber Monday Oculus Quest 2 deals go live over the past few days, meaning there's likely more than a few new adopters of the Meta VR headset.

Twitter has got a new CEO. And with him comes some major changes to the social media platform's privacy policy. Most of it welcome. But some parts of it are vague, and hence a bit worrisome.

The new policy targets the sharing of photos and videos of private citizens without their consent. In an announcement, Twitter said: “sharing personal media, such as images or videos, can potentially violate a person’s privacy, and may lead to emotional or physical harm” and that it is therefore banning “media of private individuals without the permission of the person(s) depicted.”

The new guidelines are meant to crack down on posts that may cause harassment or violation of any individual's personal space.

The new privacy rules, however, do not include media featuring a public figure.

Publishing other people's private information, such as phone numbers, addresses, and IDs, is already not allowed under Twitter's existing policy.

Vague phrasing open to interpretations

Twitter said that while its existing policies and rules cover explicit instances of abusive behavior, the new update would allow it to take action on media that is shared without any explicit abusive content, provided it’s posted without the consent of the person depicted. "This is a part of our ongoing work to align our safety policies with human rights standards, and it will be enforced globally starting today," it said.

Consequent to the update, Twitter's moderators can take action if the new rules are violated. As it happens, it did not spell out what the action would be.

Users can still share pictures or videos “as part of a newsworthy event due to public interest value, and this might outweigh the safety risks to a person.”

The new policy is also not applicable to media featuring public figures or individuals when media and accompanying Tweet text are shared in the public interest or add value to public discourse, it added.

And this is where the rub lies, according to some digital rights activists. What constitutes newsworthiness or public interest value is their concern. The phrasing is vague and open to interpretations, is activists' take. If a sensitive protest takes place outside a corporate CEO's house, will a photo of it fall under personal or private ambit?

The new CEO of Twitter has taken over at a contentious time for media censorship, and already a free speech debate has kicked off concerning his own platform.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is official, and it's set to power some of the very best smartphones of 2022.

Flights and accommodation for this launch event were funded by Qualcomm, but the views reflect the writer's own independent opinion.

But which upcoming phones will be using the new chipset? We've now had the first manufacturers confirm compatbility, and we expect to hear from more Android phone makers over the coming weeks.

Below we'll reveal all the handsets that have been confirmed so far, and then we'll talk you through some of the other phones we're expecting to see that may also sport the latest chipset from Qualcomm.

Xiaomi 12

The first phone confirmed to feature the next-gen chipset is the Xiaomi 12, which the company's CEO has announced will be "available soon".

We expect the Xiaomi 12 to launch in China in the next couple of weeks. It'll then likely come to other markets in early 2022.

While it may be that Xiaomi reveals this phone first, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be the first phone featuring the next-gen chip that will be available in Western markets.

Oppo Find X4

Oppo Find X3 Pro

The Oppo Find X3 Pro (Image credit: Future)

Although the company has yet to confirm the name of its next flagship as the Find X4, we know that Oppo's top-end phone for 2022 will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Oppo also told us that it would be revealing its next flagship phone before the end of March 2022. The Find X3 was introduced in March 2021, so it would make sense if the Find X4 was introduced around a year later.

Realme GT 2 Pro

Realme teased its next smartphone over the last few days, and the company has now confirmed that the upcoming Realme GT 2 Pro will be one of the first phones to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

This is expected to be the brand's first seriously top-end phone, designed to compete with flagships from the likes of Apple and Samsung, so it would come as no surprise if it used the new Qualcomm chipset.

We don't yet know much about the Realme GT 2 Pro, or when it'll be officially revealed, but with the company now starting to tease this handset we'd expect to see it sooner rather than later.

A new Motorola Edge

We don't yet know the name of this phone, but during the launch event for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 we heard that a new Motorola Edge device is set to debut with the chipset on board.

Ruben Castano, Head of Customer Experiences at Motorola, said: "In just a few days, we will reveal one of the very first smartphones to launch on this new Snapdragon 8 platform in China." That event has now been confirmed for December 9.

There have been leaks and rumors that suggest a new Motorola Edge X30 handset may be introduced in China in the coming weeks. That may be the handset that Castano was talking about, but that hasn't been confirmed, and whatever the phone turns out to be, we don't yet know whether it will launch in markets outside of China.

In addition to the confirmed phones above, we expect to see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powering many of the other top-end handsets that are launched over the next year or so.

Arguably the biggest phone that will feature the chipset is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22. Normally, Samsung's flagship phones run on its own Exynos chipset in some regions, while models released in other parts of the world use the newest Qualcomm chip.

However, numerous leaks have suggested that all the Galaxy S22 handsets will use Qualcomm's chipset, as Samsung has run into issues with the manufacturing of its Exynos processors.

Other leaks suggest the Huawei P60 may also feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, as the company has hit production problems with its own Kirin chipsets. Rumors suggest that this is due to the global silicon shortage that's impacting the production of numerous devices.

We haven't seen any credible leaks around other phones that could include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but we can speculate that the upcoming OnePlus 10, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Sony Xperia 1 IV and others are likely to be powered by Qualcomm's latest and greatest mobile chip. The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has traveled a long and winding road on its journey to being launched, but it seems that it's now very close to being officially unveiled – and in the meantime, we've got a sneak preview of all the colors it's going to arrive in.

These images – which look like official renders – come courtesy of the ever-reliable WinFuture, and show the Galaxy S21 FE in black, white, pink and green. It's possible that other colors might appear in the months after the initial launch as well.

The colors in these pictures match up with what we've seen from previous leaks, so it looks very much as though these will be the options for you to buy on launch day. We have come across a navy blue-ish model too, not detailed in this current leak, which might be exclusive for a particular region or for the Samsung website.

The price is right?

Another little interesting nugget of information from the same source: pricing in Europe is apparently going to start at €649 (that's the equivalent of $735 / £550 / AU$1,030, though Samsung won't use a straight currency conversion when setting its prices).

That's the same starting price as the Galaxy S20 FE launched at – in euros, at least – and it hints that maybe Samsung has managed to hit the same mark with the successor. Internationally, the Galaxy S20 FE originally retailed for $699 / £699 / AU$1,149.

As well as the colors, WinFuture also recaps some of the specs that we've seen before: the phone is expected to come with a 6.4-inch display, with 8GB of RAM on board and the option of either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

Analysis: the affordable Samsung flagship of 2022

It seems a long time ago that the likes of Samsung and Apple launched just one flagship phone a year – that was before the industry as a whole realized that offering multiple models of the Galaxy S21 or the iPhone 13 across various price points was a better strategy for pulling in more buyers.

With the Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung is adding yet another option if you're after a top-tier Galaxy handset in 2022. It won't have quite the power or the camera quality of the Galaxy S22 of course, but it will give you specs that are close to flagship level for a price that looks like it will be distinctly mid-range.

It's a smart approach, because it appeals to the people – and there are a lot of them – who are happy to miss out on the very best specs and the very latest silicon if it means big savings in terms of price. The mid-range Google Pixel series, most recently represented by the Pixel 5a, follows the same sort of idea.

Pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is going to be crucial to its success, especially with the Galaxy S22 arriving the month after (if the rumors are correct). Expect Samsung to offer it as cheaply as it possibly can as it looks to get 2022 off to a strong start.

Google, in a celebration of India's growing expertise in app and games tech, has announced Google Play's Best of 2021 (obviously all of them in the Android ecosystem). Besides the regular categories, Google has added three more to the list for the current year.

Bitclass, the app enabling cohort-based learning, was chosen the ‘Best App of 2021'. The battle royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is the ‘Best Game of 2021'. The audio app Clubhouse was the Users' Choice App of 2021 on the basis of user votes.

"This year, we saw a distinctive rise in e-learning, with many winners finding creative ways to help India learn a range of skills online," Google said in a blogpost.

The winners were selected across the developer ecosystem to reinforce that a great app or game can come from anywhere, whether you’re a large or a rising developer, it added.

Three new categories this year

On the Best App of the year, Google said Bitclass reiterated the emergence of a digital learning culture in India fueled by innovative localized solutions.

About Clubhouse, which was the Users’ Choice app of the year, Google said it "showcased India’s rising fondness for voice and audio-based platforms."

Gaming continued to gain significant interest in India, with many across the country enjoying a range of imaginative gaming experiences. "Battlegrounds Mobile India, a game developed specifically for India, claimed the prize of the Best Game of the year in the country, while Garena Free Fire MAX was the Users’ Choice pick," Google said.

Health and well-being were also of interest as well. The winners included: Jumping Minds, Evolve, being, SARVA, and Evergreen Club. These apps drove innovations to help people better manage their mental health and well-being.

To encourage innovation across Google Play, this year Google also included three new categories and expanded the awards to apps on tablets and Wear OS, and games on tablets.

Honor continues to be quite an unknown quantity, which is why we’re so interested in the brand’s new mobile launch today: it was originally created as a sub-brand of Huawei, but gained independence in early 2021, and is still in its early stages of this new lease of life.

Today, we’re seeing the first launch of the Honor 60 - that’s not speculation, it’s fact, because the company hasn’t exactly been coy regarding what’s being shown off. That said, we could see more phones or other tech shown off.

This launch is exclusive to China, which means we’ll only get availability and pricing for that country  – and it means the speech likely won’t be in English either. Nope, no subtitles, nothing. The stream is being hosted on Chinese social media site Weibo, and you can see a placeholder here, but the event only kicks off at 7:30pm local time – that’s 3:30am PT / 6:30am ET / 11:30pm GMT or 7:30pm ACT.

If you’re not keen to watch along to a tech unveiling event you might not even understand, don’t worry – that’s why we’re hosting this live blog, so you can just keep this page open in a tab. The article will automatically refresh so you can keep on top with up-to-date information and imagery.

We’ll also be providing commentary and analysis in the run-up to, and aftermath of, the Honor 60 launch, so you can appreciate and understand what really happened – or just endure all our waffling.

And so it begins - welcome to our Honor 60 live blog, which we'll be fawning over for the next few hours as the device launches.
