Annoying Gmail change rolled back following user outcry

Google has reversed a seemingly minor but much-opposed update to Gmail following widespread protests.

The email provider had revealed it would be changing how it displays notifications, dropping the red icon that appears in notifications on Android devices.

But now, just a week after the announcement, the company has stepped back and reversed the change with a new update.

Gmail notifications

Gmail had replaced the red icon with its Dynamic Color idea, as seen across the rest of the Google Workspace suite, meaning it instead matched whichever color theme the user had selected.

The update, part of Gmail version 2023.06.11.x, is available to download now.

Following its release, many Gmail on Android users raised fears that by blending in with all their other notifications, the move meant they missed potentially important messages, which were almost unconsciously hidden.

Businesses are set to spend billions on securing their 5G networks

Despite the widespread opinion that private 5G networks are secure by default, most enterprises are sceptical, and would rather invest a portion of their IT budget on securing the new, promising technology.

New research from Trend Micro has revealed businesses are ready to set aside quite a hefty part of their budget on this endeavor.

After interviewing 150 enterprises with 5,000+ employees, the majority of which already deployed private 5G networks, Trend Micro found that most enterprises invest 5-10% of their IT budgets specifically on the security of this type of network.

3GPP

Furthermore, for the vast majority (72%), the 3GPP approach to security will suffice. For the uninitiated, 3GPP refers to the use of 3GPP standards and technical specs for implementing and deploying private networks. However, Trend Micro says that 3GPP architecture isn’t impenetrable to determined attackers.

The majority of the respondents were interested in security visibility (75%), followed by risk and control management (65%), and an improved and streamlined alerting system (49%). To get there, most are requiring authentication (75%), access controls (65%), and protection from fake base stations (58%).

These findings, the researchers suggest, hint that business leaders are looking to focus on integrating and enhancing the visibility of security measures throughout their organizations. Implementation leaders, on the other hand, are focusing more on security standards elevation.

"When it comes to private 5G network technology, there's no such thing as 'secure by default,' so it's reassuring that enterprises are looking to add their own protections,” commented Greg Young, vice president of cybersecurity at Trend Micro. “What will be crucial going forward is educating this new user base about where the most critical security gaps are and what a shared responsibility model will look like in these environments."

The shared responsibility model, in which not all components need to be secured by service providers, is important for a proper security posture, Trend Micro’s researchers further claimed. Organizations should also be responsible for mitigating risk in certain parts of the environment. Finally, market education and bridging the gap in perceptions will be crucial in the future, particularly as there’s an acute lack of awareness about security vendor solutions.

Baldur's Gate 3 will come to Xbox once the devs "overcome" technical hurdles

Developers have reassured fans that Baldur's Gate 3 is still coming to Xbox, but that Larian Studios has certain technical challenges it needs to overcome first.

"Our ambition is definitely to get it ready for this year", said Larian Studios head Swen Vincke, but the fact remains that the studio is struggling to get Baldur's Gate 3 to run on Xbox Series S (via IGN). As such, there is currently no concrete release date for Xbox versions of the game.

Larian has been struggling to get Baldur's Gate 3's split-screen co-op feature running smoothly on the Xbox Series S. Despite the feature working as intended on Xbox Series X, Microsoft policy demands that Xbox Series X versions of their games cannot have any features that Xbox Series S editions lack. This means that canning the feature on Series S simply isn't an option for Larian.

Speaking on the issue, Vinke stated: “It's not that we planned this. Our plan was that we wanted to have a simultaneous release. But we've been on this game for a long time. It's a really big game. The amount of things you can do in it is insane. I think people will be surprised when they see everything. There are constraints we have to overcome, so we just work on them. Some take more time.”

The Larian chief did float the idea of "compromises", too, but made it clear that "we're trying to be very limited in the compromises we have to make [for the Xbox Series S version.] That's one of the reasons why we're taking more time also."

That said, Xbox owners aren't alone in having to wait a little longer to get their hands on the game. Though Baldur's Gate 3 recently got an earlier release date and is set to release on August 3 for PC, PS5 players will need to wait until September 6.

Baldur's Gate 3's early access launch, alongside developer Larian's pedigree, has some suggesting it could be one of the best RPGs of recent years, and may even earn a spot on our list of the best co-op games. However, it would be a shame to see game features paired back so as to meet Microsoft's demands for parity across both its Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions.

If you're looking for something to play in the meantime, Amazon Prime Day 2023 is almost upon us, offering a range of gaming deals for savvy customers.

Businesses are shunning the metaverse because it's just not very good

A new report from Gartner has claimed the metaverse is really not living up to expectations, despite companies like Apple and Meta pushing their ideal virtual realities.

Among the discoveries in the report were two key findings: VR outside of gaming is failing to meet customer expectations, and immersive meetings are not compelling enough for businesses to want to invest time and money moving away from already-good-enough video conferencing platforms.

This comes at a time when Meta is refining its expenses in what it calls its ‘year of efficiency,’ in preparation to throw more money at artificial intelligence and the metaverse. Equally, Apple has teased its Vision Pro headset which is expected to land on shelves in 2024 with an eye-watering $3,499 price tag.

The metaverse is nowhere near ready for us

Either the metaverse is not ready for us, or we’re not ready for the metaverse: Gartner has it that Gen Z is the only group expressing any measurable interest in the metaverse. Even so, 85% “are really not that interested in brands operating in metaverses.” A further two in five (43%) said that they are purposefully avoiding it owing to a lack of understanding.

Use cases aren’t all that clear, either: improving productivity, enhancing customer experiences and engagement, and addressing marketing, brand identity, and sales are all common areas that are hoped can be touched by the metaverse, but a lack of direction sees the metaverse more as a gimmick than anything beneficial.

That said, there are some instances where virtual reality headsets can prove beneficial. Microsoft can write pages about how it has helped Porsche technicians service cars and train staff more effectively with a variation of its Hololens.

That same Hololens, which has been tweaked for the US Army, has been under scrutiny for months about its lack of comfort and its conspicuousness.

Virtual meetings, though, are still out of the question. Ultimately, many workers believe that no matter how good the technology becomes, avatars will never be able to reproduce the physical communicational cues that form integral parts of our conversations.

Gartner’s research concludes by asking potential buyers to focus on the value they might be able to achieve from the metaverse, which will mean for many that holding off is the right decision for now.

Microsoft planned to acquire Square Enix in ominously titled "Project Phoenix"

Confidential documents revealed that Microsoft had plans to acquire Square Enix as part of a broader corporate acquisition strategy.

Revealed as part of the ongoing legal battle surrounding Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft sought to acquire the veteran RPG creator in order to support "future mobile-exclusive Game Pass offerings" (via The Verge).

These plans were given the foreboding title "Project Phoenix" and were also centered around leveraging ownership of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts to grow Xbox's Japanese audience as well as to capitalize on Square Enix's experience in creating mobile games

This is the latest in a string of revelations that have come to light in the wake of the US Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) court case against Microsoft. Many confidential documents have come to light, including internal correspondence planning for the acquisition of a range of other studios, including SEGA and Bungie all with the aim of increasing the reach of Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft's ongoing efforts to acquire Activision Blizzard have drawn a great deal of scrutiny from government bodies across the world, for fear that the acquisition could allow Microsoft to build a monopoly in the video games industry. In addition to the FTC's ongoing legal battle with Microsoft, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority has outright blocked the deal

That said, things are not entirely grim for the tech giant. Not only is Microsoft appealing the UK government's decision, but it also got approval from the Chinese government as well as the European Union. Though the latter did force Microsoft to abide by several caveats, it's clear that the international community is somewhat divided on the issue.

However, as the FTC is all too keen to establish, the question remains as to whether or not Microsoft's ambitions go too far. Though Microsoft has offered concessions to its competitors ahead of the proposed merger, the fact remains that there's a great deal of anxiety surrounding Microsoft's plans to increase its market share.

Given the recent success of Final Fantasy 16 as well as the enduring popularity of Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, it's fair to say that Microsoft's acquisition of the Japanese video games company would have had a seismic effect on the industry as a whole. Having the people behind one of the best MMOs and some of the best RPGs of all time at their beck and call would have done a great deal to supplement Micosoft's already significant influence.

Zoom is bringing a bit of movie magic to make you look better on video calls

In recognition that many employees are still working from home, and conference rooms still play an important part in colleague collaboration, Zoom has announced a new AI feature to make sure everybody is in view.

Intelligent Director for Zoom Rooms combines multiple cameras with artificial intelligence to make sure each participant on a call is captured in the best quality and from the best angle possible.

Capable of adjusting to movements like head turns and repositions, Intelligent Director for Zoom Rooms promises to be a clever framing tool for up to 16 participants in medium- to large-sized rooms.

Intelligent Director for Zoom Rooms

Zoom explains that its goal was to avoid what is commonly known as the ‘bowling alley effect’ by presenting each person in a gallery view.

Zoom Chief Product Officer Smita Hashim described Intelligent Director as “the solution that can bring employees together, regardless of location, so they can truly connect face-to-face.”

This is indeed something we have already seen before with the launch of Zoom’s Smart Gallery feature. Instead, that uses a single camera combined with AI to cater to small- and medium-sized rooms.

The company explained that “remote participants can now have face-to-face conversations with each Zoom Rooms participant, allowing in-room participants to be seen and heard.”

While Zoom may be behind the software and artificial intelligence advancements that have helped to deliver this feature, recognition is given to Apple, AVer, Dell, HP Poly, Intel, Logitech, and Yealink for providing the necessary hardware.

Whether or not remote working is here to stay, video conferencing continues to prove a vital part of any company’s IT portfolio for keeping colleagues connected, and continuous feature additions and improvements are one way of securing a healthy market share for Zoom.

Apple is raising iCloud prices in many markets - find out if you're affected

Apple has quietly slipped some pretty hefty price rises into its iCloud+ cloud storage plans, with millions of users across the world potentially affected.

With US pricing unchanged, it’s likely that the rises were a move to tie back into true values that have been affected by currency exchange rate fluctuations in recent months.

UK customers are among the worst affected, having to deal with price rises of at least one-fifth: the 50GB plan has gone from £0.79 to £0.99 (25%), the 200GB plan from £2.49 to £2.99 (20%), and the 2TB plan from £6.99 to £8.99 (29%).

iCloud+ prices go up across the world

According to 9To5Mac, customers in Poland, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates are also now having to fork out more each month for their cloud storage.

Apple did not immediately confirm to TechRadar Pro which countries have been affected and whether the move is likely to be mirrored across the rest of its online services. Late last year, some services like Apple Music and Apple TV+ were made more expensive.

The trio of online service bundles, known collectively as Apple One, had their pricing adjusted to reflect these changes last year. They include access to at least Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and iCloud+.

Apple has not yet adjusted its prices to reflect the iCloud+ changes, so Apple One remains at £16.95, £22.95, and £32.95 per month for Individual, Family, and Premier, respectively.

Furthermore, each of the three iCloud+ storage plans - which can be shared with up to five more family members - also comes with iCloud Private Relay which is designed to maintain some online browsing privacy, Hide My Email, and support for a custom email domain. They also get support for varying numbers of HomeKit Secure Video cameras depending on the plan.

Among the like-for-like plans that Google offers, its 200GB plan is now cheaper than Apple’s at £2.49 per month, as is its 2TB plan at £7.99 per month. Dropbox also costs £7.99 per month for 2TB.

AWS AppFabric wants to make pulling your SaaS apps together much easier

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled a new, no-code tool that it hopes will bring together all of your different software-as-a-service products together in one place, with added security and management benefits.

The new AppFabric tool lives inside the AWS Management Console, where IT and security teams can review a variety of important information in one central location.

At the same time, AWS also uncovered some of its generative AI plans for AppFabric, which are set to arrive in a future release.

AWS AppFabric

AWS claims some companies are subscribing to more than 100 pieces of software in an effort to give their workers the right tools.

From launch, the company has confirmed that some of the most popular applications will be supported, including Asana, Dropbox, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, and Zoom.

Citing each app’s distinct controls, logs, and interfaces, AWS hopes that AppFabric can bring all of this key information into one centralized location, and under one easy-to-digest layout.

The company said in a press release: “Utilizing this framework, IT and security professionals can analyze data more easily and set common policies, alerts, and a unified set of rules spanning multiple SaaS applications.”

AWS AppFabric is generally available in the company’s US East (N. Virginia), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo) regions, with more to follow “soon.”

In the meantime, AWS continues to work on an Amazon Bedrock-powered generative AI tool that is designed to work across a company’s SaaS tools to reduce the time wasted flicking between apps.

Already testing AppFabric is Israel’s largest bank, Bank Leumi, among a handful of other companies. AWS hopes that with general availability now here, more companies can get on board by amalgamating their SaaS apps.

Amazon Prime Day Fitbit deals: How to find the best fitness tracker bargains

The Amazon Prime Day Fitbit deals are the perfect time to score a cut-price fitness tracker or fitness watch in 2023. With Amazon Prime Day set for July 11 - 12, a few very early deals are beginning to rear their heads, even though the retailer's uber-sale hasn't officially kicked off yet.

The Amazon Prime Day deals always offer sterling discounts across lots of different kinds of tech – including fitness trackers and smartwatches. The best Fitbits, whether you're going for a smartwatch like the Fitbit Sense 2 or a slender fitness tracker such as the Fitbit Charge 5, are consistently some of the most popular choices when it comes to wearables.

It stands to reason there are always some great discounts on offer during deals events, like Prime Day and Black Friday.

Below, we've used last year's deals to provide an example of what sort of discounts you can expect, along with some information on how, when, and where to find the best Amazon Prime Day Fitbit deals: from cheap older models to last year's crop of top-flight smartwatches. No Fitbits you like? Keep checking back, as we'll be updating this page regularly as Prime Day closes in.

Today's best Fitbit deals in your region

Why wait for Prime? No matter where you live, you'll find all the lowest prices for best Fitbits from around the web right here, with offers available where you are.

Amazon Prime Day Fitbit deals: FAQs

When will Amazon Prime Day Fitbit deals be available?

Amazon Prime Day typically falls in July, and this year is no exception: in 2023 the two-day sales event will fall on 11-12 July. From one minute past midnight on 11 July, there will be deals popping up all over those two days, and we'll be online serving you up every Fitbit deal we can find, from the Fitbit Inspire 3 to the Fitbit Versa 4.

Lightning deals are pretty common, and come and go during the two-day period, unlikely to reappear once they sell out. If you spot a truly great deal on your Fitbit of choice, it's probably not worth waiting to see if it comes up later - there are no guarantees it will. Better grab it.

The two days of Amazon Prime Day itself aren't the whole story, as you do tend to find deals cropping up before the event itself. Best keep your eyes peeled in the days running up to Prime Day, but if we spot anything juicy, we'll share it here.

Do I need to get Amazon Prime for this?

Yes, more or less. Amazon will lock a lot of its deals and only show them to subscribers to its premium Prime service, and this is what the event is really about: it's a massive incentive to get lots of people to sign up for Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is, admittedly, pretty good value if you do a lot of shopping on the site, and you also get access to a whole vista of content, including Prime Video and Amazon Music. But some people still won't want to pay the $14.99 / £8.99 / AU$9.99 subscription service price.

How to get access to the Amazon Prime Day deals for free

Fortuanately, when you sign up to Amazon Prime, you get a 30-day trial absolutely free. When you're finished shopping the deals, you can simply cancel your Prime subscription before the 30-day mark and you'll never have to pay a penny.

Amazon Prime: 30-day free trial
Providing you've never actually signed up for Prime before, you can get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime before paying anything. Signing up and then canceling your subscription is a great way to access the Prime Day deals on the cheap. If you do decide to stick around, you get free delivery and access to other services such as Prime Video, Music, Prime Gaming and more.

Last year's best Fitbit Prime Day deals

If we were to buy a Fitbit today, we'd get the Versa 3. It's top of our best Fitbit list because, as a highly advanced premium smartwatch, it's got the best features of all the other Fitbits in the range, and at this price, it's one of the most competitive buys you're going to find.

It has the functionalities of a full smartwatch as well as dedicated health devices, so anyone looking to get notifications, take calls and manage their inbox from their wrist should look at getting it, not just fitness fans.

However, it's not just the Versa 3 getting stellar discounts. Below you can see a few examples of the deals that were available in the UK and US last year.

Atomic Heart's new DLC Annihilation Instinct looks as violent as ever

Mundfish has just announced a brand new DLC for Atomic Heart which should be shipping out soon.

Mundfish has announced that the single-player FPS game Atomic Heart will be getting its first DLC, Annihilation Instinct. The DLC will be split into four sections that'll bring players back to the Mendeleev Complex to discover the truth about NORA. The first piece of the DLC will release on August 2, 2023. You can buy all of the segments as part of the title's Atomic Pass for $39.99 / £32.99/ AUD$59.81.

We know that Annihilation Instinct will be playable on both PS5 and PS4, thanks to the newest trailer. However, as the original title was released on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC the DLC will more than likely be available on all of these platforms as well.

There's also a New Game+ which is now available for the base game. This can increase the difficulty of the main title and carries over the range of weapons and abilities you acquired. However, be careful, as the enemies you will encounter have new resistances and attack effects.

The new trailer for Annihilation Instinct looks predictably violent for Atomic Heart. You see several new and old enemy types attack the protagonist in several elaborate fight scenes that sees the player use some good old melee weapons as well as a couple of new ones.

"Survive vicious, shape-shifting new enemies and take them down using two cunning new weapons — a ranged one, the Secateur and a melee one, the Klusha — as well as your glove’s new Techno-Stasis ability, allowing you to manipulate time itself," a press release teases. "Meet a new enigmatic character, as well as returning ones in surprising circumstances and dive deep into the AI’s insanity to curb its Annihilation Instinct." It all sounds typically over the top for the alternate reality soviet shooter.

While Annihilation Instinct does look bloody violent, its main draw is its impeccable graphics. Atomic Heart's performance for PS5 and Xbox Series X was impressive at a stable 60fps while it made a great first impression when we played it in 8K on PC, proving that 8K TVs need to catch up.

While Atomic Heart didn't quite make it on our best FPS list, it did remind us of how much fun looting in games can be, which sealed the deal for me.

Can you watch The Bachelorette 2023 online in Australia?

Unfortunately, the US version of The Bachelorette is hard to come by Down Under. It does appear that 9Now adds the most recent season of the franchise to their catch-up service. However, that’s not until 5 months after the show completes its American broadcast on ABC. That means waiting until January 2024 until the entire season is available to stream here in Australia.

So, if you’re abroad when Charity Lawson’s season of The Bachelorette airs, you’ll want to follow the VPN advice as detailed above to be able to connect to your usual streaming service and watch The Bachelorette online from anywhere.

Best cloud management software of 2023

Cloud computing is one of the best innovations of the 21st century. It has made it easy for people to build online services and spurred a massive explosion in the internet economy. In the early stages of the internet, you needed to buy and maintain your own servers or sign long-term contracts with co-location providers, but cloud computing changed all of that. Anyone can now sign up with a cloud computing service provider and spin up their app in a relatively few steps.

Most cloud providers operate on the pay-as-you-go model, meaning you only pay for the computing resources you consume. This model is beneficial because you don’t need to pay significant sums for features that you’ll never use. However, it can be unpredictable and leave you with a big bill if you don’t constantly monitor your cloud usage. That’s why you need cloud management software to help you monitor your usage closely.

Cloud management tools give you oversight of your cloud computing consumption either in public, private, or hybrid cloud environments. They make it easy to identify unnecessary services you can cut down to save costs.

We tested different cloud management tools to identify the best ones. We selected the best ones based on important factors including pricing, features, performance, ease of use, etc.

How to choose a cloud management software

1. Cost

Cost is the primary consideration when choosing any software. Ensure you choose a platform you can afford in the long term to avoid problems. Cloud management tools usually don’t have a standard pricing structure. Your final bill will depend on the features you use and your cloud computing infrastructure. However, you can always read the pricing documentation to get a good estimate of the future bill.

2. Customer support

Things can go wrong at any time, and you’ll likely need external support. You should be able to contact a human support representative to rectify the issues that you encounter. Your cloud management tool should also offer complementary resources such as how-to articles, user manuals, and extensive documentation.

3. Security

Your cloud infrastructure contains sensitive business and customer information, so the cloud management tool you choose must be as secure as possible. An insecure tool introduces vulnerabilities to your cloud infrastructure that can cause data leaks or theft.

Your cloud management tool should encrypt all data in transit and have security certifications such as SOC 1 and SOC 2. It should employ cybersecurity experts dedicated to keeping the platform secure and fighting ever-evolving cyber threats.

We've also highlighted the best cloud brokers.

1. Terraform

Best for features and performance

Free version available
Great customer support
No graphical user interface

Terraform is a cloud infrastructure management tool created by HashiCorp, an American software company. There’s a free, open-source version you can download and run on your own servers. HashiCorp also offers a cloud-based proprietary version with advanced features.

Terraform works with various cloud computing providers, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and more. The platform lets you use the same workflow to manage multiple cloud providers instead of different workflows for each provider.

You can use Terraform to automate key cloud networking tasks such as applying firewall policies and updating load balancers. Automation makes work easier for your developers and IT staff.

Terraform lets you manage Kubernetes clusters on Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS. You can deploy and manage virtual machines from this platform.

The main attraction of Terraform is that it offers an open-source version that you don’t need to pay for. The paid cloud-based version is an improvement over the open-source version and offers great customer support.

A major drawback of using Terraform is that it doesn’t have its own graphical user interface (GUI), instead operating via a command line. However, there are several GUI wrappers you can integrate with Terraform to operate it graphically.

2. CloudStack

Best for multi-cloud use

Free
Open source
Complex user interface

CloudStack is a free and open-source cloud management tool developed by the Apache Software Foundation. Obviously, the benefits start with the fact that you don’t need to pay for it. You can simply download it and run it directly on your cloud infrastructure.

CloudStack enables you to manage several virtual machines with ease. Many cloud providers, e.g., Amazon Web Services, integrate with CloudStack, making it easy to use to monitor your cloud usage.

CloudStack has both a graphical interface and a command line, so you can choose which one you want. It has multi-cloud support, which is one of the main things to look out for in a cloud management tool.

CloudStack is very scalable. You can use it to manage from a few servers to thousands of servers across different data centers. It's built such that no single component failure can cause a total outage of your cloud monitoring system.

The main disadvantage of CloudStack is that its graphical interface is complex and difficult to understand.

3. AppDynamics Cloud

Best for ease of use

Intuitive interface
Multi-cloud support
Expensive

AppDynamics is a full-stack cloud observability and performance management platform owned by Cisco. It makes it easy to monitor your public, private, or hybrid cloud environments. It delivers extensive reporting and analytics on all aspects of your cloud platform, starting from the application layer.

AppDynamics works with various cloud platforms including AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. You can use it to monitor your usage on different cloud platforms from a single interface.

This platform is good at providing business-oriented reports and insights. For example, you can easily identify which features are driving unnecessary costs and tone down their usage. Like many tools now, AppDynamics employs artificial intelligence to help users identify issues related to their cloud usage and solve them before they morph into something more serious.

One of the best things about AppDynamics is its interface. The platform has a user-friendly and intuitive design that makes it enjoyable to navigate, unlike many rival tools. The designers and developers obviously put a lot of effort into building a platform that’s easy to use despite its numerous features.

The main drawback of using AppDynamics is that it’s more expensive than most rival platforms.

3. Azure Management Tools

Best for Azure users

 Works well with Microsoft Azure
Personalized dashboard
Automated processes
Complicated pricing structure

Microsoft Azure is a top-five cloud computing service. Azure Management Tools refer to a suite of software tools that Microsoft offers to enable Azure users to monitor their resource usage.

The Azure Monitor gives you deep visibility into all the Azure features that you select and how they’re affecting your final bill. The Network Watcher makes it easy to diagnose and resolve network issues on the Azure platform. The Automation tool enables you to automate some repetitive tasks and save time.

The Azure Advisor provided personalized recommendations to help you optimize your cloud computing usage. The Resource Manager enables you to deploy and manage Azure resources with ease and the Resource Mover simplifies moving resources between different Azure regions. There are many other Azure management tools; you can see the full list here

If you’re using only Microsoft Azure as your cloud provider, it’s advisable to use the platform’s native management tools. But if you’re combining Azure with other cloud providers, you can use an external cloud management tool for the multi-cloud functionality.

5. Lacework

Best for security

Focus on security
Built-in scanning
Automated reporting
User interface needs improvement

Unlike other tools on this list, Lacework focuses on one area; security. Its primary purpose is helping users keep their cloud infrastructure secure and free from cyber threats.

Lacework scans your cloud infrastructure for vulnerabilities and informs you of anyone it detects. The platform studies your cloud usage to identify unusual behaviour that are likely to be external threats. It lets you automate security compliance reporting and evidence gathering. Think of Lacework as a guard standing at the gate of your cloud infrastructure.

Lacework works with Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Azure. If you use more than one of these services simultaneously, you can protect them from a single Lacework account. The platform helps you detect threats, either subtle or obvious ones, and informs you about how to tackle them. It automates a great deal of your cloud security and removes a lot of worries.

Lacework is known to be an expensive platform. It doesn’t have standard pricing, so you have to contact the company’s sales team for a quote. We also observed customer complaints of its user interface needing improvement.

It also aims to make it easier to manage diverse IT infrastructure with a focus on virtualization, along with deploying containers in the cloud to maximize efficiency.

Features of cloud management software

1. Performance monitoring

The platform should enable you to monitor the performance of your cloud computing resources. It should have a dashboard giving you a quick glance at your cloud performance so that you can identify what needs improvements or not.

2. Scalability

The cloud management tool should work well even as you add more cloud computing features and resources. The quality of the service shouldn't lag after you add new cloud technologies to your stack and expand to more geographical locations.

3. Automation

Automation is becoming increasingly important, especially in this era of artificial intelligence. Your platform should be able to automatically scale up or scale down resources when needed. This will free up more time for developers and software testers to focus on more complex things.

4. Cross-platform interoperability

Your cloud management platform should work with as many cloud providers as possible. For example, you might be using Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Azure for different parts of your cloud needs. You should be able to monitor your usage across these cloud providers from a single cloud management tool.

Thousands of LastPass users have been locked out of their accounts - here's what to do if you're affected

A number of LastPass users have reported struggling to access their accounts due to security upgrades from the company.

The issues began in May 2023, when the password manager announced some upcoming changes and warned users that they would have to log back into their accounts and reset their multi-factor authentication (MFA).

However, many users have reported being locked out of their accounts even after resetting their codes on their authenticator apps, such as Google Authenticator or even LastPass' very own.

Lock-out

To make matters worse, affected users can't even access LastPass support, since this requires logging in too. Instead, they are prompted to reset their authentication app over and over in the client, as the system fails to recognize the new codes users have set up as instructed.

As expected, users have been taking to Twitter and the LastPass community forum to vent their frustrations.

LastPass said that in-app messages and emails were sent out notifying customers to reset their MFA well in advance of the actual announcement to the security upgrades.

The company has since clarified what the security upgrades actually entail. It has now strengthened its Password-Based Key Derivation Function (PBKDF2), an algorithm "that makes it difficult for a computer to check that any 1 password is the correct master password during a compromising attack."

The default minimum number of passwords iterations post-upgrade is now 600,000. In order to carry out this upgrade, LastPass says it was necessary to log users out of their accounts and require them to reset their MFA.

"You must log in to the LastPass website in your browser and re-enroll your MFA application before you can access LastPass on your mobile device again. You cannot re-enroll using the LastPass browser extension or the LastPass Password Manager app," it further added.

LastPass was previously featured on our list of the best password manager solutions, but since users' vaults were stolen via a series of breaches at the company, we took the decision to remove it.

The vaults were encrypted, and there was no indication that the threat actors managed to crack them - only if they managed to guess your master password could they gain access. However, other personal data that were stolen from customers, such as contact and billing information, were not encrypted.

Diablo 4 dev "clears up some details" about its "rarest unique items"

Confused about how to secure some of Diablo 4's rarest items? You're not alone. In fact, Diablo 4's lead class designer Adam Jackson has been questioned enough about the action RPG's more unusual uniques that he decided to post a helpful tweet about them.

Whilst warning us that the highly sought-after items were "realllly rare", Jackson explained that there are currently six in the game – Andariel’s Visage, Doombringer, Harlequin Crest, Melted Heart of Selig, Ring of Starless Skies, and The Grandfather – and that they will always drop at 820 item power.

As for where to find them? Jackson confirmed that "you get them anywhere you can get a regular Unique" and "they can drop from level 85+ enemies".

Blizzard's general manager of Diablo, Rod Fergusson, recently revealed that you'll need to make a brand new character to participate in Diablo 4's upcoming battle pass

The battle pass – which is scheduled to launch in mid-to-late July, along with other seasonal content – means that your existing character won't be able to experience the new content, so players must start from scratch with a brand new character. Writing on Twitter, Fergusson stated that: "to take part in the seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey and battle pass, you will need to create a new seasonal character".

"Perhaps Diablo 4’s most adventurous quality is the move towards an open world in the 'modern' sense," we wrote in our Diablo 4 review.

"What could have been a featureless, bland expanse is, instead, a delight. Brimming with intrigue and danger, the open world of Sanctuary fits the Diablo formula like a glove, providing the space in which the game’s macabre aesthetic and bold mechanical design cohere beautifully."

Blizzard has confirmed that the DDoS attacks that have plagued its games for most of the weekend are now over, and its games, plus its website Battle.net, are up and running as normal again.

Diablo 4 and other Blizzard games DDoS attacks "have ended" says Blizzard

Blizzard has confirmed that the DDoS attacks that have plagued its games, including Diablo 4, for most of the weekend are now over.

Earlier today, Blizzard confirmed that it was "currently investigating an issue affecting our authentication servers, which may result in failed or slow login attempts", whilst players took to social media to share screenshots of notifications that had popped up on Battle.net, explicitly confirming that it was a "DDoS attack" that was resulting "in high latency and disconnections for some players".

After promising that the team was "actively working to mitigate this issue", the account later posted an update: "We continue to actively monitor an ongoing DDOS attack which is affecting latency/connections to our games". No estimated date or time for a resolution was provided at that time.

Fast-forward to this evening, however, and it seems the issue has now been resolved.

"The DDOS attacks that we were monitoring have ended," the team revealed, before linking players still reporting issues to a troubleshooting page.

Starfield's physical editions will not include "physical discs"

It looks like Starfield will not be available on physical discs.

Even though physical editions of the action-RPG are currently up for pre-order, a quickly-deleted tweet from the Bethesda Support Twitter account revealed earlier today that "there are no physical discs", and "all physical editions include a code for the chosen platform".

This is the internet, though, so nothing disappears for good, and the tweet is still available to see on the internet archive site, Wayback Machine.

Bethesda's tweet confirming there will be no physical discs

Plenty of players have reached out to Bethesda on its official social media accounts and the account that made – and then deleted – the news, but to no avail.

Right now, it's unclear if the tweet was inaccurate or just plain wrong, and without reliable Twitter verification, it's hard to know exactly which Twitter accounts are real or not. Bethesda has yet to comment on the situation either way.

Starfield is set to release September 6 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.

Todd Howard recently announced that Starfield's romance options will revolve around four main characters

Despite the 1,000 planets and billions of inhabitants in Starfield, it turns out there'll only be four romanceable characters. In June 22's Kinda Funny Xcast, Howard spoke about romance options in the open-world RPG.

"The four main Constellation ones are the ones that support full questlines for them and for romance," Howard said at the time, answering a viewer question about romances in the new game.

We also recently discovered that Starfield will have various handcrafted locations placed around the galaxy on specific planets in set locations, whilst others will be randomly generated when a player lands on a planet. However, there's no fishing. Sorry, fish fans.
