LG Mini LED TVs are rolling out – but can they take on OLED?

LG's Mini LED TV range of 'QNED' screens is starting to roll out worldwide, bringing the company's exciting new combination of NanoCell LCD and Mini LED backlighting to the world for the first time.

The rollout is taking place throughout July, coming first to the US, and then to the UK, Europe, and Australia in the successive weeks. The smallest QNED screens will come in 65-inch sizes, with step-up 75-inch and 86-inch versions for select models (the QNED99 8K TV and QNED90 4K TV).

These sets won't come cheap, being billed as premium LCD models that sit above LG's NanoCell screens, though they should cost less than most OLED TVs at the same size. We do expect to see some overlap in pricing, though, between large or high-end QNED models and comparatively small or entry-level OLED sets.

Mini LED could be the standout TV technology for 2021, if the new ranges being released by Philips, Samsung and LG are anything to go by. Plenty of new Samsung TVs make use of the backlighting tech, which packs in thousands of compact LEDs for precise brightness control and improved contrast, while both LG and Philips have taken to releasing dedicated Mini LED ranges that complement their OLED offerings.

A press release states that, "thanks to LG’s state-of-the-art Quantum Dot NanoCell colour and Mini LED backlight technologies, the 2021 TVs deliver a stunning viewing experience with deeper blacks, more accurate colour reproduction with greater contrast and brightness."

What QNED TVs are there?

LG has unveiled four QNED TVs so far in its LG TV 2021 range, under its NanoCell branding: the QNED99, QNED95, QNED90, and QNED85. The first two are 8K TVs, and the latter two are 4K TVs – but all are available in 65-inch and 75-inch sizes, with an additional 86-inch size for the QNED99 and QNED90.

They vary slightly in the motion rate of its panel (60-120Hz), while the 4K models make do with a mid-spec a7 Gen 4 AI processor rather than the premium a9 Gen 4 AI chip used in the 8K models and most of LG’s new OLED sets for this year.

Exact pricing is TBA in most regions, but we know that the screens will start at AU$4,799 (likely around $2,400 / £2,400) in Australia, and go up to AU$10,799 (likely around $5,000 / £5,000) for the largest, most premium 8K model.

Need a cheap soundbar? Grab this Polk Audio React deal while you can

Soundbars can be pricey, but this great deal on the Polk Audio React proves that you don't have to break the bank to make your home cinema system sing.

Amazon has slashed the price of the Polk Audio React soundbar from £249 to £179, which is the lowest price we've ever seen for the soundbar. (Not in the UK? Scroll down for the best soundbar deals in your region.)

The Polk Audio React has dropped to around £200 in the past, but this is the first time it's plummeted below £180, so this deal is well worth snapping up.

Today's best cheap soundbar deal

Polk Audio React soundbar: £249 £179 at Amazon
Save £70 –
This compact soundbar comes with Alexa onboard, allowing you to control your audio playback with your voice alone, as well as control your smart home devices. It's also capable of delivering virtual surround sound with support for Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, which is handy if you don't have the space or the budget to deck out your home with rear speakers.

While we haven't tested the Polk Audio React soundbar for ourselves, the specs are impressive – especially at this low price.

It's capable of delivering virtual surround sound with support for Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, which is handy if you don't have the space or the budget to deck out your home with rear speakers.

HDMI ARC means the Polk React should be easy to install with nearly any TV, while Bluetooth connectivity allows you to stream music wirelessly – and there's Alexa Multi-room Music integration, which means you can pair multiple Alexa speakers with the soundbar to bring sound into your entire home.

With Alexa onboard, you can use your voice to control the soundbar, with four far-field microphones built-in and echo cancellation software designed to pick up your commands clearly.

The soundbar comes with Polk Audio's Voice Adjust technology, which the company says allows you to precisely tweak voice levels and make dialogue "crystal clear", without needing to crank up the volume.

There are also preset sound modes including Movie Mode, Music Mode, and Night Mode, with the latter preventing the sound of your films and music from disturbing your neighbors by reducing bass levels and enhancing the dialogue.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 leak shows the full design and a whole bunch of colors

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be the most exciting Samsung phone of the year, and we’ve now had our closest look yet at the likely design, thanks to leaked renders.

These renders were shared with 91Mobiles by an anonymous industry source, and they look as though they could be official marketing renders, but we can’t be sure of that. In any case, they show the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 in black, navy green, and what’s described as a ‘gradient pinkish’ shade.

All three colors appear to have a matte finish, and other visible details include a triple-lens camera on the back, and a punch-hole camera on the cover display. There’s no visible selfie camera on the main screen, suggesting that as rumored the phone will have an under-display camera. The right edge of the phone also has a volume rocker and what appears to be a fingerprint scanner.

While we’d take these images with a pinch of salt, they look convincing, and are an exact match for some renders shared by Evan Blass (a leaker with an excellent track record) previously – this latest leak just includes more colors and angles.

So we’re reasonably confident that this is what the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will look like, especially as we’re probably very close to the phone’s launch, with rumors pointing to August 3.

The specs – based on previous leaks – might include a 7.5-inch main screen, a 6.2-inch cover display, a 4,380mAh battery, and support for Samsung’s S Pen stylus. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 might also be up to 20% cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 if leaks are to be believed, so it could be slightly more affordable.

Amazon Echo Dot Kids UK release date and price revealed for the cutest smart speakers around

The best smart speakers are a great way to listen to your favourite music and audio books for adults and children alike, but with no parental controls built-in, there’s a worry that kids could stumble on something inappropriate.

Amazon is hoping to make this a thing of the past however, by bringing its extremely cute Echo Dot Kids smart speaker to the UK. Available in a Tiger or Panda design, this child-friendly version of Amazon’s smallest smart speaker comes with a year’s subscription to Amazon Kids+, which offers unlimited access to a range of  suitable audio books, radio stations and skills and games.

The new Echo Dot Kids price is £59.99 and it’s available to pre-order today, ahead of going on sale on July 21.

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids also comes with a range of parental controls and family-friendly features built-in. Known as Amazon Kids on Alexa,  it ensures Alexa is ready with age appropriate responses to commands such as “Alexa, I’m Bored” or “Alexa, tell a knock knock joke”.

At the same time, parents can also set time limits so children can’t avoid bedtime by chatting with Alexa, and even block access to services and skills from the Amazon smart speaker they don’t think are suitable.

Parental controls for all

Amazon Kids on Alexa isn’t just for the Echo Dot Kids edition however - Amazon revealed it is making the service available as a free over-the-air software update on July 21 to existing  Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot, and Amazon Echo Plus speakers in the UK.

It’s not just about controlling what kids have access to either - Amazon said Alexa will be able to answer questions about science, maths, spelling, definitions, and other education-related topics - although hopefully, it won’t let them cheat when it comes to their homework. Amazon also revealed that in this mode Alexa will continue to learn over time when it comes to answering these questions.

Similarly, parents with an existing Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Plus, will also be able to subscribe to Amazon Kids+ on Alexa too, from July 21. It costs £3.99 per month, although this drops to £1.99 if you're a Prime subscriber. It’s a variation of the subscription that ships with Amazon’s Fire Kids edition tablets

Nothing Ear 1 price in India, release date, news and leaks

The upcoming Nothing Ear 1 are one of the most exciting debutants in the true wireless earbuds space, hoping to bring a higher level of design and technology to the exploding segment.

Nothing is a tech startup founded by Carl Pei, the co-founder of OnePlus. The company was founded in late 2020 with the objective of creating products that “remove barriers between people and technology”.

Nothing is a smart devices company, with its first product being a pair of TWE, simply called the Nothing Ear 1. It is claimed to combine raw beauty and precise engineering for a pure sound experience.

Nothing's board consists of numerous popular faces from the world of tech such as Kunal Shah of Cred, YouTuber Casey Neistat, Google Ventures, Tony Fadell,  Kevin Lin, Steve Huffman and Josh Buckley.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Nothing Ear 1, which will be unveiled on July 27.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A pair of true wireless earphones
  • When is it out? July 27 globally
  • How much will it cost? Unknown, but likely to be premium

Nothing Ear 1 price in India and release date

Check out the Nothing Ear 1 on Flipkart

Launching on July 27

Originally supposed to be unveiled in June, the Nothing Ear 1 will now launch on July 27. With the release date now known, we’re sure the brand will use the coming weeks to hype up the product and reveal some more details about it.

It will be available in India at the same time on Flipkart, right alongside the global release.

Official information around the Nothing Ear 1 pricing is currently not available, but looking at the positioning and partnerships, we believe it will be a premium product and not particularly a cheap TWS.

Northing Ear 1 design, specs and features

Nothing Design Principles

Even before the company’s name or product lineup was revealed, Carl made big claims on how they will reinvent consumer tech with products that are effortless yet beautiful. An eventual partnership with Teenage Engineering suggests that minimalism and engineering will be the other pillars of Nothing’s design philosophy, while a concept render confirmed transparent elements.

Based on these clues, we expect the Nothing Ear 1 to have a minimal yet iconic design that will be somewhat polarizing but also discreet in appearance.

The good stuff will continue on the inside as the Ear 1 are claimed to bring pure sound via precise tuning and cherry picked components. Teenage Engineering is already a well-known name in the audio space, so its expertise should also trickle down, appealing to the audiophile masses.

One of Nothing’s other goals is to create an ecosystem of products which work seamlessly well with each other. It’s unclear what this will mean in the future, but it could be an indication of smart connectivity and interoperability between devices.

We expect Carl Pei and Nothing to reveal a lot more about the products in the coming days, building up to the Ear 1 launch.

What we want to see

App support

One differentiating factor between budget and premium earbuds is the existence of a companion app to play around with the equalizer, toggle features and push firmware updates to the TWS. Considering how connectivity features are a part of Nothing’s philosophy, app support is a no-brainer.

A unique design

Apple’s AirPods are probably one of the most recognizable pieces of consumer technology, which led to eventual flooding of the market with lookalikes. Since design is one of the big points of the Nothing Ear 1, we expect something equally unique from Carl and co.

Competitive pricing

The true wireless earphones segment has really exploded over the last few years, clocking manifold growth. Features and performance that were once exclusive to premium products can now be found even on budget offerings. With the competition at its best, Nothing will have a mammoth task ahead, if it hopes to capture the market.

Google tightens UK policy on financial ads after watchdog pressure over scams

The UK’s more expansive, post-Brexit role in digital regulation continues to be felt today via a policy change by Google which has announced that it will, in the near future, only run ads for financial products and services when the advertiser in question has been verified by the financial watchdog, the FCA.

The Google Ads Financial Products and Services policy will be updated from August 30, per Google, which specifies that it will start enforcing the new policy from September 6 — meaning that purveyors of online financial scams who’ve been relying on its ad network to net their next victim still have more than two months to harvest unsuspecting clicks before the party is over (well, in the UK, anyway).

Google’s decision to allow only regulated financial entities to run ads for financial products & services follows warnings from the Financial Conduct Authority that it may take legal action if Google continued to accept unscreened financial ads, as the Guardian reported earlier.

The FCA told a parliamentary committee this month that it’s able to contemplate taking such action as a result of no longer being bound by European Union rules on financial adverts, which do not extend to online platforms, per the newspaper’s report.

Until gaining the power to go after Google itself, the FCA appears to have been trying to combat the scourge of online financial fraud by paying Google large amounts of UK taxpayer money to fight scams with anti-scam warnings.

According to the Register, the FCA paid Google more than £600,000 (~$830k) in 2020 and 2021 to run ‘anti-scam’ ads — with the regulator essentially engaged in a bidding war with scammers to pour enough money into Google’s coffers so that regulator warnings about financial scams might appear higher than the scams themselves.

The full-facepalm situation was presumably highly lucrative for Google. But the threat of legal action appears to have triggered a policy rethink.

Writing in its blog post, Ronan Harris, a VP and MD for Google UK & Ireland, said: “Financial services advertisers will be required to demonstrate that they are authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority or qualify for one of the limited exemptions described in the UK Financial Services verification page.”

“This new update builds on significant work in partnership with the FCA over the last 18 months to help tackle this issue,” he added. “Today’s announcement reflects significant progress in delivering a safer experience for users, publishers and advertisers. While we understand that this policy update will impact a range of advertisers in the financial services space, our utmost priority is to keep users safe on our platforms — particularly in an area so disproportionately targeted by fraudsters.”

The company’s blog also claims that it has pledged $5M in advertising credits to support financial fraud public awareness campaigns in the UK. So not $5M in actual money then.

Per the Register, Google did offer to refund the FCA’s anti-scam ad spend — but, again, with advertising credits.

The UK parliament’s Treasury Committee was keen to know whether the tech giant would be refunding the spend in cash. But the FCA’s director of enforcement and market insight, Mark Steward, was unable to confirm what it would do, according to the Register’s report of the committee hearing.

We’ve reached out to the FCA for comment on Google’s policy change and questions about the refund situation and will update this report with any response.

In recent years the financial watchdog has also been concerned about financial scam ads running on social media platforms.

Back in 2018, legal action by a well-known UK consumer advice personality, Martin Lewis — who filed a defamation suit against Facebook — led the social media giant to add a ‘report scam ad’ button in the market as of July 2019.

However research by consumer group, Which?, earlier this year, suggested that neither Facebook nor Google had entirely purged financial scam ads — even when they’d been reported.

Per the BBC, Which?’s survey found that Google had failed to remove around a third (34%) of the scam adverts reported to it vs Facebook failing to remove over a fifth (26%).

It’s almost like the incentives for online ad giants to act against lucrative online scam ads simply aren’t pressing enough…

More recently, Lewis has been pushing for scam ads to be included in the scope of the UK’s Online Safety Bill.

The sweeping piece of digital regulation aims to tackle a plethora of so-called ‘online harms’ by focusing on regulating user generated content. However Lewis makes the point that a scammer merely needs to pay an ad platform to promote their fraudulent content for it to escape the scope of the planned rules, telling the Good Morning Britain TV program today that the situation is “ludicrous” and “needs to change”.

It’s certainly a confusing carve-out, as we reported at the time the bill was presented. Nor is it the only confusing component of the planned legislation. However on the financial fraud point the government may believe the FCA has the necessary powers to tackle the problem.

We’ve contacted the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport for comment.

Besides these there are other issues like Battle Pass 'Sweeper' challenge, Support Mode without Observation Tools, and using a shield on a reinforced wall to pass through it.

Why your business needs to embrace the next generation of Live Chat

As businesses have been forced to react and evolve after what has been a tumultuous year, the need to forge a closer connection with your customers has never been greater.

Many of the occasions where customers actually speak to a business these days come via support chats, so making sure your company has the right tools to make these interactions not just helpful, but memorable, is paramount.

Live chat solutions have rapidly grown in popularity over past years as brands and businesses look to forge better connections with their customers. Such tools allow customers to speak to a human being immediately instead of waiting on hold or in a phone queue - which can all too often lead to raised tempers and a very disappointed customer.

When it comes to providing such solutions, 3CX Live Chat looks to offer businesses a comprehensive option that will allow them to keep customers happy - but also take these interactions to the next level.

With over five million users everyday, 3CX's platform brings together live chat with a complete communication system including phone and video calls. Visitors to your site can chat with agents in real time and can even switch to a live call or video call with just a single click. If a repeat call is needed, the visitor can speak with the same agent they had chatted to before, without having to dial a phone number, and be passed on to the call center, where they might have to explain the issue all over again to someone new. For businesses this means one set of staff - and for the user, less people to talk to. These calls come completely free within a browser, meaning there's no extra cost to your business or to the customer, removing yet another potential barrier to a positive customer experience, and saving you money or your phone bills.

When a request comes in, chats can be assigned to particular agents or have groups of agents answering chats - with answering available immediately from within the 3CX web client or mobile app, greatly simplifying your tech stack, and meaning agents can even answer chats remotely via a mobile device.

Existing customers can be quickly identified, and their contact record displayed for the agent to see, with any issues tracked and reported within the system, and potential leads can be uploaded straight into your CRM platform.

Your business can also keep all its communication on one central interface platform, bringing together website live chats, messages through your business Facebook page, SMS messages and also coming soon to Google Messages.

3CX Live Chat is available for WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Wix & Weebly, allowing your business to integrate the system quickly and smoothly, so you can start helping customers immediately.

So if your business is looking to up its live chat game, then 3CX's tools could be just what you need - you can see more information and download here.

Nigeria’s MDaaS launches new healthtech product on the back of $2.3M seed extension

It is no secret that healthcare in Nigeria and most parts of Africa is not easily available and a lot of work needs to be done in that regard. However, there are instances where accessibility is taken for granted. Take for instance Nigeria where a majority of the population with some form of healthcare access would rather treat diseases than prevent them in the first place.

As a result, people get to find out about life-threatening diseases, especially non-communicable ones (NCDs), much later in their lives. Access to diagnostics and preventive care is key to addressing this situation, and Nigerian-based diagnostic startup MDaaS Global is keen on making these services readily accessible. Today, the startup also announcing the launch of its product SentinelX, has closed a seed extension round of $2.3 million to scale across Nigeria.

MDaaS, an abbreviation for medical devices-as-a-service, started back in 2016. It operates a network of tech-enabled diagnostic centers across Nigeria. Two years ago, it raised a million-dollar seed round. And in addition to the other investments secured over the last five years, the healthtech startup has raised a total of $3.7 million.

The investors in the round include lead Newtown Partners, who invested via its Imperial Venture Fund, CRI Foundation, and return investors FINCA Ventures, Techstars, and Future Africa

The idea for MDaaS came when co-founder and CEO Oluwasoga Oni was tasked alongside his classmates at an MIT class to develop an idea that could impact a billion lives. Coming from a medical background, he chose the one he could relate to.

“I wanted to solve the problem close to me and my dad in my early years. He had a 30-bed hospital and struggled so hard to find medical equipment that was good for him and also at a good rate,” he said to TechCrunch.

Oni started MDaaS with Opeyemi Ologun, Genevieve Barnard Oni, and Joseph McCord. With their connections in the U.S., the founders began connecting secondary medical equipment marketplace in the U.S. to Nigeria. They would import equipment, provide service support, and deploy to hospitals via rent, lease, or outright sale.

The founders did this for a while until they realized that the core problem wasn’t providing equipment pieces; it was a matter of necessity. The money doctors spent on the pieces of equipment was more than the earnings from patients. Therefore it just didn’t make financial sense for doctors to own the equipment.

MDaaS decided to revert to an aggregation model where they would look at a clinically underserved area, build a centralized diagnostic center, and aggregate demand from small, medium-sized hospitals within that community. They launched the first center in the Nigerian southwestern city of Ibadan. The startup subsequently got into Techstars and has since added six other centers across other cities in Nigeria.

MDaaS diagnostic centers offer a wide range of services. First, there are imaging services such as digital x-ray and ultrasound, cardiac services such as ECG and echo. Then the lab services ranging from chemistry analysis and immunoassay to hematology.

So how did SentinelX come about? Oni tells me that it was during the pandemic last year. As MDaaS helped out with testing for COVID in patients, it was also taking time to screen for underlying health conditions.

“We didn’t really find a lot of people that had COVID, but what we found was that a lot of people had underlying conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol that they didn’t know about. So we were really shocked about that.”

In the past two decades, NCDs have risen dramatically in sub-Saharan Africa. They are driven by a growing incidence of cardiovascular risk factors like unhealthy diets, reduced physical activity, hypertension, and diabetes. Statistics point out that by 2030, NCDs are set to become the leading cause of mortality on the continent.

So far, MDaaS has done a reasonably good job with its diagnostic centers. To date, the healthcare startup has provided diagnostic services to over 40,000 patients in underserved communities. It has also performed over 80,000 diagnostics tests across cardiology, radiology, neurology, laboratory, and general health checks. Over 750 clinicians use its referral network, and it has locked partnerships with more than 500 health facilities and 10 HMO networks.

Therefore, building SentinelX on the infrastructure already put in place serves as an opportunity to provide more customer-centric products for its users. The platform acts as a personalized care program where patients pay a one-time fee of N35k (~$70) and access a doctor all year round.

At the moment, users can run through a series of tests ranging from 60 or 70 biomarkers to assess individual risk for a wide range of diseases, including cancers, diabetes, kidney disease, and heart diseases. Clinical and family history and demographic data are also taken into consideration as part of the comprehensive analysis. Meanwhile, MDaaS creates a care plan unique to customers should they have health concerns after screening.

SentinelX is currently in private beta. However, the plan is to go live in September 2021. One would argue that $70 for a year might be cheap for this kind of service, Oni concurs but says it’s all about the long game for MDaaS.

“What we’re trying to solve is non-consumption. Most people in Nigeria don’t go for annual screening, which is something meant to be routinely done. Instead, what we tend to have in Nigeria is that people wait till they get sick before going for checkups. By that time, it costs so much money to solve the problem,” Oni echoes on the lackadaisical effort some Nigerians place on their health

Through SentinelX, MDaaS is trying to get as many people as possible to cheaply pre-screen themselves for one year then pay for full value the next year after seeing the benefits of regular checkups. The service is one of many MDaaS can deploy on top of its diagnostic infrastructure built over the years. But getting to this point meant the startup had to scale through the capital-intensive hurdle associated with infrastructural plays. Moreover, defining what price to charge patients has even become more challenging due to the economic recession that has frequently plagued Nigeria.

“We have had to get very creative in the way we build things because we target low to middle-income patients. As a result, we’ve needed to customize our diagnostic infrastructure, especially as it relates to costs for the people we serve,” Oni added.

The economic recession has also affected one of MDaaS’ most priced assets: doctors. Brain drain is a major challenge facing the Nigerian health system right now. It has led to a dramatic reduction in the number of Nigerian doctors who leave for a better quality of life and pay, with some reports estimating that over 2,000 doctors leave annually.

“When you hear about it in the news, it seems like a theoretical thing. But for us, it is real because we have staff leaving to go abroad,” the CEO remarked. MDaaS tries to approach the situation by training younger doctors and deploying them to its centers. Still, there’s some commitment play as both parties agree on a period of time the doctor would work with the company.

Per application of funds, MDaaS wants to scale its physical footprint across Nigeria by adding six more diagnostic centers this year. According to Oni, the healthtech startup wants to become one of Nigeria’s three largest diagnostic centers. The CEO also said MDaaS would consider a pan-African expansion to similar countries like Nigeria, although he gave no timeline. But by 2025, the company aims to operate 100 centers across the continent and serve a million patients per year.

Speaking on the news, the managing partner at Newtown Partners, Llew Claasen, said, “Most consumers in sub-Saharan Africa receive suboptimal medical care because of infrastructure gaps, low physician density, delays in diagnostics, and a lack of health data visibility. We think the physical diagnostic infrastructure that MDaaS is building out, coupled with the means to collect data and deliver value-added software services, has the potential to completely change the way that physicians, clinicians, and pharmacists do their jobs and lead to better health outcomes for a huge number of previously underserved consumers.”
