Samsung is expected to launch its 2024 TVs at the CES show in early January 2024, but details of many models have already leaked thanks to official regulatory filings in Korea. The included models include the next-gen premium QD-OLED TV, the Samsung 95D, and the successor to the Samsung S90C pictured above, the Samsung S90D.
The details were identified by DisplaySpecifications, which reports that the flagship S95D will come in three sizes in the US and Europe: 55, 65 and 77 inches. Other details haven't emerged yet. but we're expecting similar pricing to the current S95C range, an incredibly bright panel, a 144Hz refresh rate and four HDMI 2.1 ports. The S90D is also listed with 55, 65 and 77-inch sizes.
In addition to the S95D and S09D QD-OLED TVs, Samsung has also filed multiple Neo QLED TVs featuring both 4K and 8K models. On the 4K front there's the QN85D, QN90D and QN95D, all of which are expected to have 4K VA panels with mini-LED backlighting and 120Hz refresh rates. According to Samsung watchers Sammobile, those TVs are expected to be available in 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch and 85-inch variants, and at least one 98-inch version is highly likely. The 2024 range also includes the QN800D 8K TV, which will be launched in 65-inch, 75-inch and 85-inch sizes.
That's not all. The same report says that there will be three new OLED ranges too, the Q70D, Q75D and Q80D, in sizes ranging from 55 to 85 inches. The Q80D is also expected to come in 85 and 98-inch versions.
Last but not least, there will be the DU8000 and DU8500 crystal UHD 4K TVs in sizes from 43 inches to 75 inches. Those TVs are expected to be IPS or VA LCD TVs with edge backlighting and, like the current crystal UHD range, very low price tags: the CU8000 is currently $349 for the 43-inch model, while the 85-inch version is currently $1,199.

Passwords are a pain, let’s be honest – a necessary evil to keep us secure. None of us wants to have to deal with these cumbersome little beasties, but they’re an inescapable part of online life. In the future, things will change – as a new passwordless reality comes to fruition and passkeys evolve. But for now, traditional typed passwords remain prevalent and in need of taming.
There are simple ways to deal with passwords, some of which are terrible. Like having ridiculously simple passwords that are easy to guess. Or ‘remembering’ them by writing them all down in a notepad, where a nosy person might find them and get access to your online accounts, if they’re a nefarious sort.
I don’t do anything like that, of course – perish the very thought – I use mnemonics to help make passwords complex enough, but still memorable, so they don’t have to be jotted down. However, even that’s not an ideal way of dealing with passwords, and so I have some (admittedly dull) new year’s resolutions to vastly improve my relationship with passwords and my overall online security.

Taking the plunge with a password manager
This is the main pillar of my reformed relationship with passwords – yes, getting someone else to do them. Or rather, getting something else to do them in the form of an application.
Password manager software automatically generates passwords for all online accounts without me having to lift a finger. These are incredibly secure passwords, too – lengthy strings of garbage that I wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of remembering.
Taking the plunge with a password manager is something that’s been on my computing to-do list for quite some time, and one of those things I simply haven’t got around to doing. Mainly because it seems easier to carry on as I’ve been doing for a long, long time now (I owned a PC before the worldwide web even existed). So, 2024 is the year it’s going to happen, and I’ll relinquish my old system for a more convenient and secure way of dealing with passwords.
Which password manager am I going to run with? After weighing up the pros and cons of the various options out there, I narrowed it down to either Dashlane or NordPass – but in the end, the latter won out. Why? NordPass scored with its wide-ranging support across multiple platforms, regular updates – and plentiful features – not to mention that it represents a great value proposition.
1. Never, ever, use stupidly simple passwords ‘Password’ is not a good password, much like a riot shield is a bit pointless if it’s made out of tissue paper. Choose a complex password with a decent mix of characters, and a mnemonic to remember it (or better still, use a password manager). 2. Don’t reuse passwords Never reuse the same password for multiple online accounts. It may seem tempting to do so for easy recall, but if a hacker or other ne’er-do-well gets hold of that password, obviously they could then access more than one of your services. 3. Don’t keep the same password forever You don’t have to change any given password much, but it’s worth doing so every now and then. Especially if a company you have an account with has a data breach, it’s a good pre-emptive move just to change your password, even before you’ve been told if you’re affected.
Getting a password manager isn’t necessarily bulletproof, of course. What if that company or their systems are somehow breached in some manner? It’s very unlikely that this will happen with a reputable vendor, but it has happened in the past.
At any rate, a robust approach to security doesn’t rely on a single solution, and 2FA (two-factor authentication) is a seriously valuable addition as a second line of defense to back up passwords. This often takes the form of a code texted to your phone, or emailed, after your initial login to an account.
My problem in this department is that I don’t have 2FA enabled on all my online accounts yet. I do have it running on most important services, mind you, but I need to go through my array of various online accounts, check where it’s supported – in theory, on most big sites and services – and implement it, if 2FA isn’t already active.
Much like migrating over to a password manager, this is something I’ve been meaning to do for some time now – and it’s been nagging away at the back of my mind all that time as a task that really needs attending to. In most cases, it'll simply be a case of going into my account > settings > security (or a variation of that process), and turning on two-factor authentication. So, I shall get it done, and tick another niggle off my list of password blues for 2024.

Biometric bonus
While I’m fixing password security issues, my final resolution is to actually use biometrics wherever possible. Until fairly recently, I used a hardware token for logins to my online banking, but have since switched to use the fingerprint sensor on my phone (via the bank’s app). It’s a much more convenient and secure way of logging in, and wherever there’s an option to use a fingerprint login, I’ve resolved to switch to it.
Another point on this subject: while initially I wasn’t convinced about the tech, I now love the Windows Hello login on my Surface Pro tablet – it has got better over time, and works pretty much flawlessly now, even in different lighting conditions.
I’d advise strongly in favor of using facial recognition, fingerprints, or other biometrics wherever you can turn them on, which is usually a case of exploring an app's settings for security options that can enable hardware like fingerprint sensors. None of this is exactly fun, but you'll go into 2024 feeling all the more secure and smug for it.
The Apple Watch ban story has developed quickly over the last week and a bit, and there's now a new twist: the US Court of Appeals is putting a pause on the US sales and import ban while it reviews the case, which means the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 can go back on sale for the time being.
"We are thrilled to return the full Apple Watch lineup to customers in time for the new year," an Apple spokesperson told TechRadar. "We are pleased the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has stayed the exclusion order while it considers our request to stay the order pending our full appeal."
The watches in question are now once again available from "select" Apple Stores, and will also be going on sale from the Apple website from 12pm PT / 3pm ET on Thursday, December 28 (that's 8pm in the UK, and early on December 29 in Australia). All Apple Stores should have stock by the weekend.
As for how long the ban on the ban will be in place, it's not clear. The next significant date is January 10, which is the deadline for the International Trade Commission (ITC) in the US to respond to Apple's appeal – that's the organization that prompted Apple's decision to take the smartwatches off sale in the first place.
Key dates
This all relates to a lawsuit that's been rumbling in the background all year, brought by tech company Masimo: it claims that the blood oxygen sensor technology in Apple's watches infringe on patents that are already registered, and it's proving to be a major headache for Apple and its wearable sales.
As 9to5Mac reports, Apple has also submitted a software fix that it hopes will get it off the patent dispute hook – a decision on whether or not that update changes anything is going to be made on January 12, so it will be a busy January for Apple news.
The full ban on US sales and imports of the Apple Watch 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 came into force on Christmas Day, December 25, after the White House administration decided not to intervene and reverse the ruling already put in place by the ITC.
And bear in mind that this is all preemptive action by the parties involved: no definitive decision on whether Apple is in the right or the wrong here has yet been made. It's certainly a painful problem for Apple though, as the looming threat of a ban continues to impact both sales and quite possibly repairs and replacements too.
It's official: Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Time is a hit. According to Netflix the sci-fi spectacular generated an impressive 23.9 million views in its first three days of streaming, a result that The Hollywood Reporter says is a "solid kickoff for the movie". That puts it comfortably at the top of the global Netflix movie streaming chart, ahead of both Leave The World Behind and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
That should make Netflix feel reassured about its investment: after all, it's also committed not just to a second movie, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, but to extended Snyder cuts too. Despite fairly mixed reviews it looks like the franchise is off to a pretty stellar start.
Come on baby light my fire(place)
Netflix's latest charts are for the week up to and including Christmas Eve, and as you'd expect from this time of year the biggest hits have been heavy on the family-friendliness: in addition to the Chicken Run sequel the top 10 also includes The Super Mario Bros. Movie, cute animated classroom comedy Leo, and two separate Dr Seuss movies: The Grinch and How The Grinch stole Christmas.
For TV shows it's much more mixed, although it's nice to see the classic Fireplace 4K; Crackling Birchwood from Fireplace For Your Home in here at number 8. If we were feeling unkind we might suggest that its performances are less wooden than some of the ones in the current number 1, My Life With The Walter Boys: Season 1, which tops the chart with 7.6 million views.
After that it's very much a mixed bag. Season 6 of The Crown is in at number 2, followed by Trevor Noah's Where Was I at three. Obliterated, Car Masters and World War II: From The Frontlines are at four, five and six respectively, while kids' cartoon CoComelon Lane is seventh. The aforementioned fireplace is at eight, followed by Season 1 of Young Sheldon and Squid Game: The Challenge respectively.
It'll be interesting to see the following week's figures because these ones are from a week where many of us were still at work or at school; this week's chart results will show what we've been watching while immobile after our festive feasts.

As we reported last year, Amazon is going to start putting adverts in Prime Video for paying subscribers this year – and that advertising starts later this month on January 29. If you want to keep your ad-free viewing you'll need to pay extra for it: $2.99 a month in the US and £2.99 per month in the UK. The ad-free option will cover everything but live sports, which will continue to include ads.
Amazon's email sent last night to subscribers and its previous blog post tries to portray this as a good thing: the ads are coming to make your TV experience better! The introduction of ads "will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers."
But of course it's not about making your experience better any more than filling your Amazon search results with products from the Shenzen Dangerous Toy and Lawn Mower Company was about making Amazon more useful: like other streaming services, Amazon is finding that streaming is costing more and bringing in less than it hoped. So this is a one-two punch of revenue raising: Amazon will either get more money from putting ads in your shows, or by persuading you to pay to get rid of them.
What Amazon ads mean for you
That very much depends on the show. For shows made for what streamers used to tell us were the bad old days of ad-supported TV, it won't be much of a trial: those shows were made with ads in mind, so they have breaks where the ads are supposed to go without interrupting the flow. But for shows made without ads in mind, the experience is likely to be the same as I'm getting on FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV) channels such as Amazon's Freevee, where ads interrupt key scenes at random with no respect for continuity.
What we're seeing here is part of a bigger picture that applies to music streaming too: what begins as disruptive, with tech firms promising to cut the cost and boost the convenience of accessing media, eventually starts to resemble the very things it was set up in opposition to – such as broadcast TV with its ads, or cable with its expensive subscriptions.
Amazon isn't the only streamer facing tough competition and increasing costs now that the era of effectively free borrowing has come to an end, but it's unique in the way that it combines Prime Video with its wider Prime service: if you decide you hate the ads and want to cancel, that means canceling your other Prime benefits too such as faster free delivery, Amazon Photos and so on. That makes Prime Video stickier than the likes of Netflix, which you can just cancel without then having to wait longer for your pet food and gadgets to be delivered.

If a new wearable has been on your wishlist, you may have been a little disappointed with 2023's offering. There were some excellent devices announced, but none were hugely groundbreaking compared to previous iterations.
The Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 were identical in design to the previous best Apple Watches, the Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra for example, while the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic weren't too dissimilar from their predecessors either - apart from the re-introduction of the rotating bezel on the Classic, of course.
There's plenty in the pipeline for 2024 however, with rumours of some genuinely exciting wearables to look forward to in the next 12 months.
Samsung Galaxy Ring

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is the first wearable we are expecting to see appear in the new year and it's one of the more exciting ones too. Samsung has been in the wearables game for a long time now – anyone remember the Samsung Galaxy Gear? – but the Galaxy Ring would mark a new category for the company, and it's a sector it could dominate if it applies the same premium build quality to smart rings as it does to its Galaxy smartphones.
Going after the popular Oura Ring and Circular Ring pictured above, the Galaxy Ring is expected to be a minimalist take on fitness trackers, offering a number of sensors within a small and discreet format. Rumors suggest many mainstay Galaxy Watch features will be on the Ring, including the ability to measure heart rate, steps, and SpO2 from your finger.
The best part? It's expected to launch in January 2024 alongside the Galaxy S24 smartphones so we may not have too long to wait to see if Samsung will put a ring on it.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7

It wouldn't seem right to mention the Galaxy Ring without talking about the Galaxy Watch 7 models. Whether we will continue to see a Galaxy Watch 7 and a Galaxy Watch 7 Classic, or whether Samsung switches back to a Watch 7 Pro in place of the Watch 7 Classic for 2024 remains to be seen for now. We can bet our bottom dollar Samsung will refresh its Galaxy Watch in 2024 however, likely towards the end of the summer alongside the Galaxy Z devices.
Details are currently few and far between but we're hopeful the Watch 6 Classic's rotating bezel is either here to stay for the 2024 successor, or it's swapped in for a Watch 7 Pro. With the flagship Watch 7, we expect the premium quality build these smartwatches offer, and we'd love even longer battery life to compete with the likes of Garmin. 48 hours please!
The Galaxy Watch 7 models are also fully expected to run Wear OS whilst delivering a range of health features, including the Watch 6's blood pressure monitoring through pulse wave analysis, and full body composition to replace a smart scale. Compatibility with iPhone would be a nice addition, though we must say we aren't holding out.
Apple Watch SE 3

It's a big year for Apple Watch in 2024, with a decade having passed since the original Apple Watch was announced. We are very much expecting the Apple Watch X to be revealed in 2024 as the 10-year anniversary model, but let's not forget about the humble Watch SE.
This model typically sees a bi-annual release, and with no Watch SE announced in 2023, it is on the docket for an update in 2024.
Our wishlist for the third generation model includes an Always-On Display – this has been on the Apple Watch Series since the Series 5 so it's not new technology anymore, but it's never materialized on the SE range. An electrocardiogram and blood oxygen monitoring feature (once its legal troubles with Masimo are sorted out) wouldn't go amiss either.
It will no doubt continue to have a smaller feature set than the Watch X, but the Watch SE 3 – or Watch SE (2024) as it will likely be known as – is expected to be an excellent option for most people, and hopefully, it remains a decent price too. The only bad news with this one is that we don't expect to see it appear until September 2024 with the new iPhone models.
OnePlus Watch 2

When OnePlus launched its first smartwatch in 2021, it was initially met with plenty of enthusiasm. Then the reviews arrived and it was clear that you'd be settling (see what we did there) by choosing it over the Pixel Watch or Samsung's Galaxy Watch models.
The company appears to have learned a thing or two from its first attempt however, with whispers suggesting the OnePlus Watch 2 will launch in 2024 and bring a number of improvements.
Google's operating system offers more flexibility in terms of apps, alongside a simpler user experience. As for when the next OnePlus Watch might launch, our money would be around Mobile World Congress at the end of February 2024 but there's nothing concrete yet.
Garmin Forerunner 65

Garmin has so many devices, you'd be forgiven for not being able to keep up. There has been an update to the Lily smartwatch mooted and, as ever, we wait patiently for the Garmin Fenix 8, but we also have our eyes peeled for an update to the budget Forerunner in 2024, too.
The Forerunner 55 arrived in June 2021 so it's due a refresh despite not having a regular release pattern. It was excellent for offering many of Garmin's brilliant software features but for a more budget-conscious runner that was happy enough with a less premium build quality compared to the company's more expensive devices, like the Fenix range.
Word is thin on the ground at the moment, but a refresh to the Forerunner 55 in what would presumably be the Forerunner 65 is one we are expecting (or hoping for) in 2024.
When it comes to Christmas songs, there can be only one – and it's Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You. In what's becoming something of a festive tradition, it's been announced that Mariah's song has smashed Spotify's one-day streaming record, a record previously set by... Mariah Carey.
According to TMZ, the song was streamed 23,701,697 times on Spotify on Christmas Eve, breaking the previous year's record of 21,273,357 streams. That in turn smashed the previous year's record, which smashed the one before, which smashed the one before.
Mariah didn't get it all her own way this year, though: for the very first time since her reign of tinsel terror began, Carey's song was beaten to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in the run-up to Christmas by Brenda Lee, who Carey sent a bouquet to in congratulations.

How much money does Mariah Carey make from Christmas streaming?
Spotify doesn't publish details of how much it pays artists per stream, so we have to turn to third parties who make informed estimates, aka guesses, based on what they think the royalty rates may be. Reports suggest that Mariah has made an estimated $4.3 to $7.8 million in royalties from Spotify alone.
When you factor in other royalties from radio play, CD sales and so on The Associated Press suggests that this year's earnings from All I Want For Christmas... will top $100 million. And of course Mariah isn't just for Christmas: she's one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
There's no doubt that Mariah's 1994 song is well ahead of other festive favorites with 1.5 billion streams to date. According to Statista, the next most-streamed holiday song, Wham's Last Christmas, has 1.2 billion streams; third place goes to Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me, with 906 million. Those numbers pale in comparison to the world domination of Taylor Swift, who had a reported 110.43 million monthly Spotify listeners this month, but Swift's figures cover her entire catalog of music rather than a single song.

The first part of Rebel Moon, Zack Snynder's sci-fi epic, didn't just have to tell a story: it also had to set up the world, which inevitably meant that some of it was a little slow and ponderous. Part two has no such responsibilities, and as a result it can be a full-on all-action epic – and going by the new trailer that Netflix has just dropped, that's exactly what it looks like it'll be.
As Tom Power reported a few days ago after speaking to the cast and to Snyder himself, Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver will be a "war-driven" epic where "it's all going to kick off". According to the hype, it's everything you liked about the first film made bigger, better and louder.
What to expect from Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
In the second Rebel Moon film Kora (Sofia Boutella) has to defend the moon of Veldt against the massed forces of the Motherworld in an epic battle, one which reveals the true characters (and it seems quite a lot of backstory too) of the various warriors. As Netflix puts it, "As the full force of the Realm bears down on the burgeoning rebellion, unbreakable bonds are forged, heroes emerge, and legends are made."
Staz Nair, who plays Tarak, told us that "Part 2 is very action-driven and war-driven... We get into some heavy emotional stuff that hits home, and explore some dark and dramatic things within this setting. It's not something I expected, but that's why it's a space opera and not just a sci-fi movie."
It's pretty clear that if you loved Rebel Moon you're going to love this, and if you're one of the people giving it a really low rating online – it's currently sitting at 24% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes – then you're probably not going to rush to see the second part. But given that most of the criticism was over story beats and sci-fi tropes, Part Two's stronger emphasis on action might turn out to be an unexpected treat for those who felt the first part was a little disappointing. And if not, there's always the R-rated version that Snyder plans to release later.

Doctor Who 2024: what we know so far
The BBC is keeping some of the details close to its chest so far, but it's provided some teasing treats to whet our appetites for the forthcoming season. As we know it stars Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor and Millie Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday, and together they'll travel in the TARDIS and face a whole bunch of new monsters.
The season will feature a star-studded line-up including Yasmin Finney and Bonnie Langford, who will be back as Rose Noble and Mel Bush, and there will be some new faces too: Jinkx Monsoon as "the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet", Jonathan Groff in a mysterious key role, Indira Varma as the Duchess, and Lenny Rush as Morris.
This is very, very exciting stuff: Gatwa has already won over Whovians with his incredible charisma – The Guardian said he "is so charismatic you want to leap into the TV with him" and the LA times says that "The main notes in Gatwa’s performance are exuberance, joy, openness, flirtatiousness, cheekiness and a superabundance of energy" – and showrunner Russel T Davies appears to be on fire right now, with the holiday specials garnering lots of rave reviews. According to Total Film, The Church on Ruby Road is "the most promising start to a new Doctor Who era yet."
