How the HONOR 90 can help you beat the bedtime blues

If you’ve ever wondered why it’s late and you still can’t sleep, the culprit might be right next to you, or right in front of you: your phone could be messing with your mind. And we don’t mean that in a spooky way. We mean it in a science way.

It turns out that many phones, tablets and other digital devices can interfere with our natural rhythms, keeping us awake just when we really need to get to sleep and making our eyes uncomfortable too. That late-night Netflix binge or video chat with your best friend may have some unintended effects, and those effects can last long after you’ve closed the call or exited the app.

That’s why HONOR has added eye comfort features to the brand new HONOR 90 to help you sleep better and see better too.

Is your phone giving you the blues?

The white light we see isn’t actually white: it’s a mix of colours, and that means there are different shades of white. For example, there’s the cool, blueish white you get from some LED bulbs. And there’s the warm, yellowish light you get from table lamps and late summer nights.

Many digital devices emit the former, and that blue light has a big effect on our bodies. Natural light changes over the course of the day, with cool white light helping us focus and concentrate during daytime and then warmer white light telling our bodies it’s time to wind down. And when we wind down our bodies produce melatonin, the hormone that makes us drowsy.

It turns out that blue light seriously reduces the amount of melatonin our bodies make. Instead of thinking “ooh, time for bed”, our bodies think it’s still time for action – and that means it can be much harder to get to sleep and to stay asleep. In the short term it can give us eye strain, and in the longer term lack of sleep has been linked with all kinds of unpleasant physical and mental issues.

The good news is that not all phones give you the blues. In fact, the HONOR 90, like its sibling the HONOR Magic5 Pro, is designed to do the opposite.

The right light at the right time

HONOR’s latest phones have two key features to help avoid eye strain and sleepless nights, enabling you to use your phone as late as you like without encountering any of the ill-effects associated with blue light exposure.

The first is called Dynamic Dimming, and it simulates the changes you’d experience with natural light during the day, reducing eye strain by up to 18%. And the second, Circadian Night Display, automatically adjusts the colour temperature of your display as the day progresses – so it’s stimulating in the daytime and relaxing in the evening, helping match the melatonin cycle of a normal day. So during the day it delivers cool, crisp and clear light to help you concentrate, and in the late evening it warms up to help you produce the right amount of that all-important melatonin.

The HONOR 90’s eye comfort features are so advanced it’s the very first device of its kind to achieve TÜV Rheinland certification for its flicker-free, 3,840PWM Dimming display.

Testing HONOR’s eye comfort features, leading academic Dr Glen Jeffery of University College London says that HONOR is taking an “important step” in the right direction when it comes to eye comfort. “The new HONOR 90 features a 3840Hz flicker-free display, as well as Dynamic Dimming and Circadian Night Display modes,” he explains. “We tested HONOR’s phone over a 24-hour period and found that towards the end of the day, the blue light output was reduced by 40%. The results of our tests show that by using these features you can promote healthier sleep and reduce eye strain.”
