As the number of shows and movies available to stream in Australia continues to grow at an impressive rate, it can be tough to keep up with all the new additions to each streaming service each month.

We've all come to anticipate a new stable of Netflix Originals releases each month, but figuring out which shows they are and when exactly they become available isn't so easy. And what about the large number licensed shows and films that are made available to stream, if only for a limited time?

In an effort to keep you informed of the best shows and movies that are in the process of being added to Netflix, we'll be bringing you an updated list of what you can expect on the service on a monthly basis.

Not only that, we'll also be singling out the biggest releases, as well as a number of quality TV shows and films which we believe deserve your Netflixing time.

A fairly decent month in terms of Originals, Netflix has a number of great new TV shows, specials and movies on offer – here's what's new on Netflix in September 2020. Check out Netflix's newest offerings below!

TV shows highlights for September 2020

Sing On! (16/9/2020)

Sing On!

Singing competitions like The Voice are all the rage these days, which is why Netflix has launched one version in Sing On! The twist here is that the show's contestants aren't looking for fame or recording contracts – they're looking for cold, hard cash! Similar to video games like SingStar and Rock Band, contestants must sing their hearts out while trying to stay in-tune with an on-screen vocal analyser. The longer they last, the more money they win! Following on from German and Spanish versions of the show, the US version is hosted by the hilarious Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and seems like a great deal of fun.

The Chef Show: Season 2 (24/9/2020)

The Chef Show

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

From the creative mind of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Enternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes I'm Thinking of Ending Things, a film that's takes the filmmaker's unmistakable mind-bending style into darker territory. Based on Iain Reid’s acclaimed novel, the film sees a young woman (Jessie Buckley) accompany her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his family for the first time. Right from the outset, something feels very off about these people...

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (10/9/2020)

The Babysitter: Killer Queen

A direct follow-up to Netflix's 2017 horror comedy The Babysitter, this sequel picks up years after Cole (Judah Lewis) defeated a satanic cult led by his babysitter. Now in high school and trying to forget his past, Cole is faced once again by the very same cult members he stopped before, which is weird, because they were dead last time he checked.

Southeast Asia’s leading property listing company PropertyGuru is making great strides across the region as it secures a fresh investment of SG$300 million ($220 million), it announced this week.

The proceeds, financed by existing investors KKR and TPG, both buyout titans, will fuel PropertyGuru’s already ambitious push across its main market Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, where it operates country-specific real estate portals.

The private funding arrived almost a year after the online realtor pulled its plan to list on the Australian Stock Exchange. The company, launched in 2007, was reportedly aiming to raise up to $275 million at the time. And it has been nearly two years since the firm raised $144 million from KKR.

Growth has been encouraging for PropertyGuru in 2019, with a 24% year-over-year revenue growth that beat its own forecasts. The company calls itself Southeast Asia’s largest player, but it’s up against some formidable opponents, including a joint venture set up by close rivals 99.co and iProperty last year. 99.co is itself backed by prominent investors like Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, Sequoia Capital and East Ventures.

Online realtors have been making aggressive expansion in Southeast Asia as the region becomes an attractive destination for real estate investors who want to tap the region’s relatively low investment threshold and high rental yield. Many come from neighboring China, which has reined in property speculation in recent years.

PropertyGuru has kept itself busy in 2020 so far, launching a mortgage marketplace in Singapore and a virtual walkthrough feature for property developers as well as seekers at a time when traveling is unsafe or unattainable. Every month, 24.5 million property seekers use the company’s various products to find homes, which number 2.7 million across the region at the time of its latest funding news.

“Our strong financial performance over the last few years has enabled us to invest aggressively and smartly, to build what is today an integrated and differentiated technology platform that caters to the unique opportunities in Southeast Asian markets,” chief executive Hari V. Krishnan said in a statement.

The Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal website and mobile app was hacked early this morning. The social media platform, while confirming it, said "it has taken steps to secure the compromised account and is "actively investigating" the situation." This incident comes on the back of several Twitter accounts of prominent personalities being hacked in July this year.

Modi’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the tweets posted on the account @narendramodi_in.

The account, with over 2.5 million followers, is the official Twitter handle for Modi’s personal website (www.narendramodi.in) and the Narendra Modi mobile application.

Modi’s personal Twitter account, @narendramodi, which was unaffected by this incident, has over 61 million followers.

The hack

At 3:09 a.m IST today (September 3, 2020), a series of tweets were posted from the Twitter account @narendramodi_in. The tweets were removed an hour later at around 4:05 a.m.

In the first tweet, the hacker appealed to the followers of the Twitter account to donate generously to the PM National Relief Fund for Covid-19 and claimed that the Indian government is accepting donations via Bitcoin.

In the last tweet posted at around 3:16 a.m., the hacker group ‘John Wick’ took the responsibility of hacking the account.

'John Wick' group in the thick of it

Recently, Paytm Mall, the e-commerce marketplace wing of Paytm, was allegedly hacked, according to risk intelligence platform Cyble, by the same group that calls itself 'John Wick'. However, in a series of tweets, ‘John Wick’ claimed it did not hack PayTM Mall.

Hackers had in July accessed Twitter's internal systems to hijack some of the platform's top names including US presidential candidate Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama and billionaire Elon Musk, and used them to solicit digital currency.

Twitter believes a targeted spear-phishing attack allowed hackers to gain entry to its internal systems on July 15, leading to the compromise of a number of high-profile accounts.

Amid a busy smartphone launch season, Oppo revamped its popular F series in India with the launch of the F17 and the F17 Pro recently. This time around, the emphasis is on the design and cameras.

The Oppo F17 series made its global debut in India. Oppo claims that it will be the ”sleekest phone of 2020”. Along with the new F series devices, the company also announced a new Oppo Enco W51 TWS with hybrid active noise cancellation feature. Here’s everything we know about the Oppo F17 series.

Cut to the chase

Oppo F17 Pro launched in India: specs and price

The F17 Pro is just thick at 7.48mm and weighs just 164 grams. The build is plastic and the company has used 400mm nano-coating to give it a better look, feel, and grip.

Under the hood, the device is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P95 chipset with an anti lagging solution which makes the device 22% faster than Oppo F15. The Oppo F17 Pro is available in only one configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage along with a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Powering the device is a 4,000mAh battery with Vooc 4.0 Flash Charge 30W. The device can be filled from 0 to 100% in just 53 minutes. There is also a Superpower saving mode that offers you extended battery life with limited app usage. The device will be available in three colour options Magic Blue, Matte Black, and Metallic White.

Hostinger Single Shared Hosting - $2.99/mo for 12 months
(£2.99/roughly AU$4.00)
Hostinger has slashed the price of all its web hosting plans by up to 90% - and they all come with a free domain name to boot. The deal won't last long, so check it out.View Deal

Popular web hosting company Hostinger is currently holding a back-to-school sale with one particularly special element: a free domain name with any plan that lasts longer than 12 months.

The obvious catch is that the domain name is leased to you for the first year only, after which you'll need to extend the subscription (at a higher price) or give it up (and risk having to deal with a domain squatter).

The cheapest plan will cost you $2.99/mo (or £2.99/roughly AU$4.00) for a 12-month subscription, but only $0.99/mo for a four-year contract. The total cost of ownership jumps from $43.27 to $57.24 (around a third), but that's not a lot for an additional three years' worth of service.

Other than the free domain name (which can be worth up to $67 per year), there’s a free lifetime SSL certificate up for grabs and you can also add DDoS protection (and a CDN) for as little as $9.95 courtesy of CloudFlare.

Sure, it’s no dedicated hosting but Hostinger’s single shared hosting plan still allows you to create a website with 100GB bandwidth and, in theory, unlimited storage (although you’re likely to get an email if you try to upload several gigabytes of content in one go). There’s also a couple of MySQL databases, a pair of subdomains and one FTP account.

Bear in mind, the deal is not available for Hostinger's online store or website builder offerings.

(Update: While Chinese tech giant Tencent once again bore the brunt of the latest ban, it also announced a fresh infusion of funds, to the tune of $40 million, into India's popular music streaming app Gaana almost simultaneously)

Responding to the fresh Indo-China border tussle, India has banned 118 more mobile applications of Chinese origin. Most notable apps among the freshly banned applications are the highly popular game PUBG Mobile, messaging app WeChat, few APUS apps and ShareSave app from Xiaomi

This new list adds to the list of 59 apps that were banned in the month of June for a similar reason. Back then, TikTok was the most prominent app which was banned by the federal government.

According to a written statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology, these apps are banned because they “are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of state and public order.”

The statement further reads that the department has “received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India”.

Though the government chose to invoke its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act to ban these apps, it is pretty obvious that the Indian government has retaliated on both fronts – on the national border and by impacting the revenue of Chinese companies by banning these applications.

It is not the first time that the India government has taken such a drastic step. After banning the 59 Apps in June, the agencies decided to block 47 more apps that were either copies or lite versions of some of these popular applications. This time, however, both the primary as well as the lite apps have been banned in one go.

(Update)

While Chinese firm Tencent appears to be bearing the brunt of India's ban, with three of its major investments in the app world getting impacted. Besides WeChat, the Chinese company also owned TikTok as well as partnered with the developers of PUBG to launch its mobile version.

However, on another front, Tencent also pumped in $40 million (roughly Rs.300 crore) in a fresh round of funding into India's popular music and podcast streaming platform Gaana. Others to participate in the latest round that was announced today, include Times Internet.

The latest round comes about two years after Tencent had let a $115 million round in Gaana, which completes with the likes of  JioSaavn, Spotify, YouTube Music and Wynk. The Chinese tech giant has participated in the latest round through its European entity Tencent Cloud BV.

Biofourmis, which combines AI-based data analytics and biosensors to monitor the progress of medical treatments, has raised funding from one of the world’s most high-profile investors. The digital therapeutics company, which launched in Singapore and is now headquartered in Boston, announced today it closed a $100 million Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from returning investors Openspace Ventures, MassMutual Ventures, Sequoia Capital and EDBI.

The company’s last funding announcement was in May 2019 for a $35 million Series A led by Sequoia India and MassMutual, the venture capital arm of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Biofourmis’ platform combines AI-based health analytics and wearable sensors to help healthcare providers gauge patient progress and the effectiveness of drugs and other treatments. The company, founded in 2015 by chief executive Kuldeep Singh Rajput and managing director Wendou Niu, said this is the largest funding for a healthtech startup in Southeast Asia to date. In addition to Boston and Singapore, Biofourmis also has offices in Switzerland and India.

Since its Series A funding, Biofourmis has grown through a series of partnerships with seven pharmaceutical companies and 10 health systems, including Novartis, AstraZeneca, and Mayo Clinic. Biofourmis also made several acquisitions, including wearable biosensor startup Biovotion and Gaido Health, a digital therapeutics company for cancer patients.

The funding will be used to validate and bring new digital therapeutic solutions for cardiology, respiratory, oncology and pain treatments to the market. Biofourmis also plans to expand in the United States and Asia-Pacific markets including China and Japan.

Biofourmis also said today that it is realigning its internal operations into two verticals: Biofourmis Therapeutics, which partners with companies like AstraZeneca and Chugai to created software that can help increased the efficacy of drug treatments, and Biofourmis Health, a “home hospital” platform that allows health providers to monitor patients remotely as they transition out of acute care. Biofourmis Health focuses on heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory illnesses and cancer.

EDBI is an investment firm linked to Singapore’s government, and looks for startups that can help advance the country’s industries, including healthcare. Biofourmis’ funding from EDBI is a strategic investment, and its technology is being used in Singapore as it copes with repeated outbreaks of COVID-19.

Announced last July, SoftBank Vision Fund 2 launched with $108 billion to invest in AI-based technology. The first Vision Fund is coping with heavy losses stemming in large part from its investments in WeWork and Uber, so the performance of Vision Fund 2’s focus on markets including healthtech (its other investments in the space include pharmaceutical delivery startup Alto and life sciences company Karius) is being closely watched.

In a press statement, SoftBank Investment Advisers partner Greg Moon said, “We believe predictive health is the future of medicine and Biofourmis is a leader in using AI and machine learning-based models to advance digital therapeutics.”

The sound quality isn’t best-in-class, but if you’re not too picky when it comes to audio, these are a fine set of headphones. There’s even decent noise cancellation, making them a great all-rounder. This set is now discounted at Dick Smith, with plenty of colour options available including black, grey, white and red.View Deal

In-ear headphones

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus | AU$224 (RRP AU$299; save AU$75)

The Buds Plus got a number of upgrades over their predecessors: a whopping 11-hour battery life, a dual-driver design for improved audio and support for iOS users. They don’t have noise cancellation tech, which could be a dealbreaker for some, but what the Buds Plus offer instead is a price point that goes relatively easy on the wallet. All told, these are a great set of earbuds for most people’s needs. Available in black, white and blue with a 25% discount from Microsoft’s eBay store.View Deal

Jabra Elite 65t | AU$148 (RRP AU$199; save AU$51)

For a nice – and much cheaper – true wireless alternative, the Jabra Elite 65t are worth your while. These earbuds have a reliable connection and don’t sacrifice on sound. We also found them a pleasure to use, and the long battery life is very much appreciated. You can score these ‘buds in titanium black for AU$148, or copper black for AU$149 – both available from Amazon Australia.View Deal

Beats Powerbeats Pro | AU$264 (RRP AU$349.95; save AU$85.95) [EBAY PLUS EXCLUSIVE]

The Powerbeats Pro are our favourite fitness ‘buds for a number of reasons, not least because they’ve got a hook which fits around your ear to help keep them in place while you’re working up a sweat. And a little perspiration is something they can withstand, with an IPX4 sweat-resistant rating. Plus members can jump on eBay and enter the code PARTY21 at checkout to snag them for AU$85 less.View Deal

Apple AirPods Pro | AU$329 (RRP AU$399; save AU$70)

These are the earbuds to buy if you’re an Apple fan. They are the first from the brand to deliver noise cancellation, and the updated design offers a better fit than the original AirPods. These ‘buds are usually quite costly and rarely see a discount, so while this isn’t a big price drop, 17% off will please many who’ve been holding out, all things considered. Just head to Kogan to pick them up.View Deal

Sony WF-1000XM3 | from AU$230 (RRP AU$319; save up to AU$89) [EBAY PLUS EXCLUSIVE]

When it comes to true wireless earbuds, we think the Sony WF-1000XM3’s are the ones to beat. That’s because Sony has managed to squeeze active noise cancellation and a great battery life into this smart-looking set of earbuds. The silver pair is now cheapest at AU$230 in eBay’s Plus-member sale, but you’re still in luck if you’re hoping for the black set – they’re only slightly more at AU$239. Our favourite overall headphones (and noise-cancelling too): Sony WH-1000XM3

The cans that can do everything

Acoustic design: Closed | Weight: 254g | Cable length: 3.94 ft | Frequency response: 4Hz-40,000Hz | Drivers: 40mm | Driver type: Neodymium | Sensitivity: 104.5 dB / mW (1 kHz) | Impedance: 47 ohm | Battery life: 30 hours | Wireless range: 10m

Outstanding noise cancellation
Fantastic sound quality
30-hour battery life
Mediocre call quality

The Sony WH-1000XM3 noise-cancelling headphones are the best you can buy – for now, anyway. They’re very much in line with what we’ve seen from Sony in the past two years, and with this model the electronics giant has managed to improve on some already fantastic sets. The noise cancellation these headphones have can beat anything Bose has to offer with ease. That’s because Sony has dedicated time to perfecting audio playback and its noise-cancelling technology. However, their crown could soon be handed over, as rumours of a Sony WH-1000XM4 release date have been circling. We’ll see what 2020 brings.

Our favourite budget headphones: JBL Tune 750BTNC

Quality noise-cancelling over-ears for a pocket-friendly price

Acoustic design: Closed | Weight: 220g | Cable length: N/A | Frequency response: 20Hz - 20kHz | Drivers: 40mm | Driver type: N/A | Sensitivity: 95dB | Impedance: 32 ohms | Battery life: 15 - 22 hours | Wireless range: 30ft (10m) | NFC: No

Good sound quality
Strong active noise cancellation
No waterproofing
Average battery life

JBL is a name you’ve probably heard in the affordable audio space. The brand consistently puts out good quality speakers and headphones with an even better price tag to match. Our previous pick on this list was the JBL Live 650BTNC, but there’s now a worthy successor to take their place – the JBL Tune 750BTNC. These noise-cancelling headphones sound great, look great, and they’re comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Maybe some might miss waterproofing and a few minor features but, at this price, it might be foolish to complain.

Our favourite true wireless earbuds: Sony WF-1000XM3

The true wireless headphone jungle has a new noise-cancelling king

Weight: 70g | Frequency response: 20Hz - 20kHz | Drivers: 6mm | Driver type: Dome Type | Sensitivity: N/A | Impedance: N/A | Battery life (charging case): 18 hours | Wireless range: 30ft | NFC: Yes

Efficient noise cancellation
Inconspicuous looks
Great fun to listen to
Not suitable for sports

It’s still rather rare to get ANC in wired earbuds at all, yet Sony has managed to squeeze best-in-class noise cancellation tech into these ‘buds that have cut the cord – and that’s no small feat to achieve. And then there’s the battery life – Sony has even managed to pack above-average battery life in here, offering up to six hours of playback on a single charge of the ‘buds alone. And then there’s more to go in the charging case as well. While the WF-1000XM3 won’t offer the same level of noise cancellation that you’ll find in their over-ear counterparts mentioned above, they offer a sleek form factor, and an alternative for those who don’t enjoy carrying around full-sized cans.

Our favourite workout earbuds: Beats Powerbeats Pro

Impressive-fitting workout ‘buds from Beats

Weight: N/A | Battery life: 9 hours | Heart rate monitor?: No | On-ear controls?: Yes

Good sound
Immaculate fit
Case is fairly bulky
Limited noise isolation

If you’re looking to amp up your fitness routine with an energetic soundtrack, our top pick would be the Beats Powerbeats Pro. These true wireless earbuds fit comfortably on and around the ear, thanks to their close-fitting hook design, and they don’t seem to ever fall out – important when you’re in the middle of a workout. They also have an IPX4 sweatproof rating, a long battery life of nine hours on a full charge and sound fantastic whether you’re in the gym or at home. What’s not to love?

The U.S. government rolled out a new online tool Wednesday designed to give the public insight into where and who is testing automated vehicle technology throughout the country.

The official name of the online tool — Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing Initiative tracking tool — is a jargony mess of a word salad. Fortunately, its mechanics are straightforward. The online tool gives users the ability to find information about on-road testing of automated vehicles in 17 cities throughout the United States. The public can find out information about a company’s on-road testing and safety performance, the number of vehicles in its fleet as well as AV-related legislation or policy in specific states.

The AV tracking tool is part of the Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing  Initiative, called AV TEST for short, that was announced in June. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is overseeing the AV TEST Initiative.

The online tool is hardly comprehensive, but it’s a start, and continues to expand. The tool currently shows data in 17 cities, including Austin, Columbus (Ohio), Dallas, Denver, Jacksonville, Orlando, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The data might include testing activity as well as dates, frequency, vehicle counts and routes, NHTSA said.

The information on the interactive web page is based on information that companies have volunteered. In other words, companies testing automated vehicle technology are not required by the federal government to provide data.

However, a growing number of AV founders and engineers understand that public education and acceptance will be necessary if they ever hope to commercially deploy their technology. Ten companies and nine states have already signed on as participants in the voluntary web pilot. The participating companies, to date, are Beep, Cruise, EasyMile, FCA, LM Industries, Navya, Nuro, Toyota, Waymo and Uber Advanced Technologies Group. The online tool also contains voluntarily submitted safety reports from Aurora, Ike, Kodiak, Lyft, TuSimple and Zoox.

NHTSA has limited the number of companies submitting data during the pilot phase, Dr. Joseph M. Kolly, the agency’s chief safety scientist said during a briefing earlier Wednesday.

“The more information the public has about the on-road testing of automated driving systems, the more they will understand the development of this promising technology,” NHTSA Deputy Administrator James Owens said in a statement. “Automated driving systems are not yet available for sale to the public, and the AV TEST Initiative will help improve public understanding of the technology’s potential and limitations as it continues to develop.”
