Memorizing all of the past Wordle answers is nearly impossible – after all, there have now been more than 1,400 of them. But knowing what's gone before is important, because Wordle answers don't repeat – so you could easily be wasting guesses.

What you need then, is a list of past Wordle answers, and that's what I've made for you here. It's organized by month and you can simply search the page to see whether the word you're thinking of has already been used.

So pick one of the best Wordle starting words, take a look at today's Wordle answer if you need to and keep this list close when you're playing – your streak will thank you.

Past Wordle answers: The full list

Below you'll find a list of every Wordle so far – all 1,475 of them (and counting!)

I've first organized the answers alphabetically, and then by month starting with the most recent. You can use the menus on the side (on desktop) or above (on mobile) to jump straight to the month you want.

If you're trying to find out whether a specific word has already been an answer, there are easy ways to search for it:

  • Windows: click CTRL+F
  • macOS: click CMD+F
  • iOS: click Share (the box with the arrow), then 'Find on page'
  • Android: click the three dots in the top-right then 'Find in page'

In each case, simply type in the word you're looking for, and if it has already been an answer you can use the arrows to navigate to it. Right, on with the list…

Past Wordle answers: Days with two answers

On which days have there been two Wordle answers?

One of the key things about Wordle is that everyone gets the same answer each day. Or is it? There have been four occasions when the game has served up two different solutions, causing no end of consternation among players.

The first two were victims of the New York Times' purchase of the game in February 2022. The NYT removed around a dozen words that it decided were too difficult for players, or that were in some way controversial.

However, at that time people could play either via the NYT's games site, or via the original Wordle website created by Josh Wardle. And unfortunately, the changes made by the NYT didn't always filter through correctly to the original version.

The result was that on February 15, 2022 some people got AROMA and some the much harder AGORA for puzzle #241. Then on March 30, the same thing happened with STOVE and HARRY for game #284; the NYT thought people would only consider HARRY to be a name, and not a verb (as in to harrass), so it removed it.

The problem reoccurred in May 2022. On May 10 (game #324), the NYT removed the word FETUS in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to repeal Roe vs Wade, deeming it too controversial. Instead, most players got SHINE. The next day, some players got GECKO while others received BUTCH, due to the NYT's servers not yet having reset for everyone from the previous day's change.

Where we are today is not hybrid cloud rebranded. Hybrid was a transition strategy. Distributed is an entirely new operating environment, where cloud infrastructure and services are physically located in multiple, dispersed environments: on-premise data centers, multiple public clouds, edge locations, and sovereign zones. Yet they are managed as a single, cohesive system. Unlike centralized or hybrid approaches, distributed cloud treats geographic and architectural diversity as a feature, not a compromise.

This shift happened gradually. Organizations reacted to new regulatory frameworks like GDPR and FedRAMP, which enforce data locality and privacy standards that centralized architectures can’t always support. Meanwhile, latency-sensitive applications, like real-time analytics, pulled compute closer to the user, pushing cloud computing infrastructure to the edge. And cost became a concern: 66% of engineers report disruptions in their workflows due to lack of visibility into cloud spend, with 22% saying the impact is equivalent to losing a full sprint.

Distributed cloud addresses all of these challenges, enabling businesses to comply with regulations, improve performance, localize deployments, and maintain operational continuity in one architectural shift. But managing it to ensure that a distributed framework actually reaches its full potential requires serious rethinking. Infrastructure has to be modular and versioned by design, not patched together.

Dependencies need to be explicit, so changes don’t cascade unpredictably. Visibility should extend beyond individual cloud providers, and governance has to follow workloads wherever they run. Yet most organizations today operate without these principles, leaving them struggling with fragmentation, limiting their scalability, opening the door to security and competitive threats, and slowing innovation.

Old Tools, New Problems

There’s growing evidence to show just how widespread the shift toward distributed cloud has become: 89% of organizations now use a multi-cloud strategy, with 80% relying on multiple public clouds and 60% using more than one private cloud. The reasons are strategic: reducing vendor lock-in, complying with data localization laws, and improving performance at the edge.

But the consequences are operational. Fragmentation creates chaos. Teams struggle with version control, lifecycle inconsistencies, and even potential security lapses. Infrastructure teams become gatekeepers, and developers lose confidence in the systems they rely on.

Most organizations are still applying traditional centralized cloud management principles to a distributed world. They rely on infrastructure as code (IaC), stitched together with pipelines and scripts that require constant babysitting. This approach doesn’t scale across teams and regions. IaC also introduces new dependencies between layers that are invisible until they break.

All in all, the approach is problematic: 97% of IaC users experience difficulties, with developers often viewing IaC as a “necessary evil” that slows down application deployment. The result is a kind of paralysis: any change carries too much risk, so nothing changes at all.

A New Operating Model for a Fragmented World

Solving this requires more than another tool. It requires a new operating model and mindset. Infrastructure should be broken into modular, composable units with clear boundaries and pre-defined dependencies. Teams should be able to own their layer of the stack without impacting others. Changes should be trackable, auditable, and safe to automate.

Platforms that offer a single control plane across environments can make this possible. They turn complexity from a liability into a strategic asset: one that offers flexibility without sacrificing control. This is where emerging approaches like blueprint-based infrastructure management offer a compelling path forward. Instead of expecting AI or DevOps teams to connect workflows, infrastructure can be transformed into modular components. Think Lego bricks, except it’s a chunk of code that’s versioned, pre-approved, and reusable.

In this model, automation doesn’t mean giving up control. It means enabling teams to move faster within guardrails that are defined by architecture. The result is a system that scales, even across regulatory zones, business units, and tech stacks. This kind of shift doesn’t eliminate complexity, but it makes it manageable, legible, and strategic.

And we’re already seeing the rise of blueprint-based and modular infrastructure strategies across the industry—from Cisco’s UCS X-Series, which decouples hardware lifecycles for flexible upgrades, to Microsoft Azure Local’s unified control plane for hybrid deployments, and the growing adoption of platform engineering as a discipline for building reusable, scalable systems. It’s an evolution that just makes sense.

The Strategic Advantage of Managing Well

Distributed cloud isn’t something organizations opt into. It's the state they're already operating in. The real differentiator now is how well it's managed. Scaling infrastructure has always been achievable; distributing infrastructure, by contrast, demands a different kind of investment: in architecture, workflows, and operational discipline.

Without a system built specifically for elasticity, decoupling, and visibility across environments, complexity quietly erodes both speed and trust. Infrastructure becomes harder to change, risks accumulate invisibly, and innovation slows to a crawl.

The right foundation turns that story around. Distributed infrastructure, when managed deliberately, doesn’t have to become a barrier. It becomes a catalyst.

Elastic systems allow teams to localize deployments without fragmenting control. Decoupled architectures enable parallel innovation across business units, cost centers, and regions without introducing instability. Unified visibility makes governance a continuous function, not an afterthought. Managing complexity isn’t about eliminating it; it’s about structuring it so that distributed systems can scale sustainably, adapt safely, and operate predictably.

In that context, infrastructure becomes a lever for scale instead of a source of drag. Managing it well isn’t just an operational need. It’s a strategic advantage.

  • The AirPursue PM20 is Dreame's first ever air purifier
  • It can detect your presence and direct pure air wherever you go
  • Cal also double up as a heater and circulating fan

If you dream of having your own personal cloud of clean air, Dreame has you covered. The brand has just launched its first-ever air purifier, called the AirPursue PM20, and it has a rather unusual USP: it's fitted with radars, which enable it to detect people and blast clean air in their direction. It's not a feature that I've seen in all my time writing about the best air purifiers on the market.

Enter a room and the AirPursue will sense your presence and switch itself on, and then use its big, swiveling air-blaster cup to shoot clean air in your direction. The cup can rotate through 120 degrees, and follow you wherever you go within a radius of 16.4 feet (5 meters). The marketing materials suggest it'll be particularly helpful for allergy-sufferers. (This purifier also bears a striking resemblance to the Dyson Big+Quiet, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence.)

It's not just an air purifier, either. Like a number of Dyson purifiers, it can double up as a circulating cooling fan in warmer weather, and act as a heater when it gets cold, too. So while it's bulky, it's doing its best to justify taking up your floorspace.

The tracking technology is the most unique part, but it also looks solid in terms of other features. There's a 4-layer filter system, including H13 HEPA filter. Like any good air purifier, it has the ability to capture and remove airborne allergens, bacteria, and other pollutants from the air (here's more on what air purifiers can help with). Rather more unusually, it also promises to break down formaldehyde. The PM20 will monitor air quality and report back on the precise levels of allergens, formaldehyde, TVOC, and other contaminants via an LCD display.

There's a companion app for remote control, plus voice assistance if you want to go hands-free.

Price & availability

The AirPursue PM20 is the flagship model, and comes with a list price of $999. It's designed for larger spaces, with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 400 m³/h. There's also a smaller PM10 model for $899.99, which is designed for medium-sized rooms and has a CADR of 300 m³/h. Both are available to buy now in the US and Canada, direct from Dreame, and are also due to land on Amazon.

You might not be aware of Dreame. It's a newer home appliance brand, but in my opinion one to watch – it already features in TechRadar's best cordless vacuum guide and best hair dryer guide. I'm intrigued to see how its purifier debut performs – we'll have a review model winging its way to a tester already, and will report back as soon as possible.

Even with today’s vast arsenal of cybersecurity tools and AI-enhanced threat detection, attackers continue to succeed – not because the technology is failing, but because the human link in the defensive chain remains exposed. Cybercriminals almost always take the path of least resistance to execute a breach, which often means targeting people rather than a system.

According to McKinsey, a staggering 91% of cyberattacks have less to do with technology, and more to do with manipulating and taking advantage of human behavior. In other words, despite technologies like AI advancing at break-neck speed, cybercriminals are still more likely to hack people than machines.

From a cybercriminal’s perspective, this makes sense. It’s the path of least resistance. Why spend resources hacking your way through a high-tech, AI-secured front door when there’s an open window around the back? This isn’t news to CISOs – according to a 2024 IBM survey, almost three-quarters (74%) now identify human vulnerability as their top security risk. They’re aware of the open window, and now they’re trying to secure it.

Easier said than done

That’s easier said than done, however. Whether it’s a well-timed phishing email, a spoofed call, a deepfake video, or a barrage of authentic-seeming push notifications designed to wear down a user’s judgment, attackers are adapting faster than defenses can compensate.

The reality is that while security vendors race to outpace attackers with smarter algorithms and tighter controls, the tactics that most reliably lead to breaches are psychological, not technical. Threat actors are exploiting trust, fatigue, social norms, and behavioral shortcuts – tactics far more subtle and effective than brute-force code.

It’s not a lack of technology leaving organizations vulnerable to these techniques, it’s a lack of alignment between those tools and the way people actually think and operate. In fast-paced, high-pressure environments, employees don’t have the bandwidth to second-guess every request or scrutinize every prompt.

They rely on instincts, familiarity, and patterns they’ve learned to trust. But those very instincts are what attackers hijack, turning help desk tickets into access exploits, or mimicked CFOs into multi-million-dollar heists. As generative AI accelerates the realism and reach of these tactics, organizations face a critical question: not just how to keep the bad actors out, but how to better equip their people within. Because when breaches hinge on human decisions, cybersecurity isn’t just a technology issue – it’s a human one.

Trust, bias, and the psychology of security breaches

Human behavior is a vulnerability, but it’s also a predictable pattern. Our brains are wired for efficiency, not scrutiny, which makes us remarkably easy to manipulate under the right conditions. Attackers know this and design their exploits accordingly. They play on urgency to override caution, impersonate authority figures to disarm skepticism, and drip-feed small requests to trigger consistency bias. These tactics are ruthlessly calculated, and they work not because people are careless, but because they’re human.

In early 2024, a finance worker at a Hong Kong firm was tricked into transferring $25 million after attending a video call with what appeared to be the company’s CFO and other colleagues – each one a convincing AI-generated deepfake. The attackers used publicly available footage to clone faces and voices, creating a seamless illusion that exploited trust and familiarity with devastating effect.

The eye-opening part is that these deepfake tools are now readily available. Modern social engineering doesn’t rely on obvious red flags. The emails aren’t riddled with typos, and the impersonations don’t sound robotic. Thanks to generative AI, deepfake technology, and access to vast training data, attackers can now create incredibly convincing personas that mirror the tone, behavior, and language of trusted colleagues. In this environment, even the most well-trained employee can fall victim without fault.

Heuristics – mental shortcuts – are frequently exploited by attackers who know what to look for. “Authority bias” leads people to follow instructions from perceived leaders, like a spoofed email from a CEO. The “scarcity principle” ramps up pressure by creating false urgency, making employees feel they must act immediately.

And “reciprocity bias” plays on basic social instincts – once someone has received a seemingly benign gesture, they’re more likely to respond positively to a follow-up request, even if it’s malicious. What so often looks like a lapse in judgment is often just an expected outcome of cognitive overload and the common, everyday use of heuristics.

Where policy meets psychology

Traditional identity and access management (IAM) strategies tend to assume that users will behave predictably and rationally – that they’ll scrutinize every prompt, question every anomaly, and follow policy to the letter. But the reality inside most organizations is far messier. People work quickly, switch contexts constantly, and are bombarded with notifications, tasks, and requests.

If security controls feel too rigid or burdensome, users will find workarounds. If prompts are too frequent, they’ll be ignored. This is how good policy gets undermined – not out of negligence, but because the design of the system clashes with the psychology of its users. Good security mechanisms shouldn’t add friction; they should seamlessly guide users towards better choices.

Applying principles like Zero Trust, least privilege, and just-in-time access can dramatically reduce exposure, but only if they’re implemented in ways that account for cognitive load and context. Automation can help here: granting and revoking access based on dynamic risk signals, time of day, or role changes without requiring users to constantly make judgment calls.

Done right, identity management becomes an invisible safety net, quietly adapting in the background, rather than demanding constant interaction. Humans shouldn’t be removed from the loop, but they should be freed from the burden to catching what the system should already detect.

Building a security culture

Technology may enforce access policies, but culture determines whether people follow them. Building a secure organization has to be about more than simply enforcing compliance. That starts with security training that goes beyond phishing drills and password hygiene to address how people actually think and react under pressure. Employees need to recognize their own cognitive biases, understand how they’re being targeted, and feel empowered – not penalized – for slowing down and asking questions.

Equally important is removing unnecessary friction. When access controls are intuitive, context-aware, and minimally disruptive, users are more likely to engage with them properly. Role-based and attribute-based access models, combined with just-in-time permissions, help reduce overprovisioning without creating frustrating bottlenecks in the form of pop-ups and interruptions. In other words, modern IAM systems need to support and empower employees rather than make them constantly jump through hoops to get from one app or window to another.

The human firewall isn’t going anywhere

The biggest takeaway here is that cybersecurity isn’t just a test of systems, AI-driven or not – it’s a test of people. The human firewall is arguably an organization’s biggest weakness, but with the right tools and policies in place, it can become its greatest strength. Our goal should not be to eliminate human error or change the innate nature of humans, but to design identity systems that make secure behavior the default – easy, intuitive, and frictionless.

We list the best employee recognition software.

Full spoilers immediately follow for Ironheart.

Ironheart has disengaged its thrusters. Its final three episodes landed on July 1 or 2 (depending on where you live), with the trio's arrival marking the end of the Marvel TV show's run on Disney+.

Or does it? The last Marvel Phase 5 project's finale is full of unresolved plot threads that suggest Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) and Parker Robbins' (Anthony Ramos) stories have only just begun in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Throw in the debut of a long-awaited Marvel villain and other interesting tidbits that might impact the MCU moving forward, and Ironheart could be more important to the MCU than we realized.

But enough babbling. Let's take a look at the biggest questions you have about Ironheart's ending and I'll do my best to answer them.

Who is Mephisto in Ironheart? And which actor plays him in the MCU?

A smiling Mephisto stands in front of a raging fire in Hell in a screenshot from a Marvel comic book

The demon lord known as Mephisto in Marvel Comics has finally made his MCU debut (Image credit: Marvel Comics)

Let's address the second question first because it's easier to answer: Mephisto is played by Sacha Baron Cohen – he of Borat, Ali G, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 fame – in the MCU.

Cohen's appearance won't shock some MCU devotees. He was first linked with the role of Mephisto in October 2022 – those reports arriving 18 months after Marvel fans had convinced themselves Mephisto would be unveiled as primary antagonist of WandaVision. As it happened, Agatha Harkness was that show's Big Bad. Nonetheless, fans have longed for the day that Mephisto would finally make his bow in Marvel's cinematic juggernaut.

As for who (or what) Mephisto is: he's Marvel Comics' takes on Mephistopheles, the demon lord who appears in the Germanic fable Faust. Mephisto is also an alias of The Devil, aka the mythical personification of evil who lauds it over the realm known as Hell in many religions.

Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff becomes Scarlet Witch in WandaVision

Large swathes of Marvel's fanbase thought Mephisto would show up in 2021's WandaVision TV show (Image credit: Marvel Studios)

But back to Marvel's take on Mephisto. First introduced in comic book 'Silver Surfer #3' in December 1968, the demonic entity is a recurring adversary of The Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man in Marvel literature, although he's also crossed paths with Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, Scarlet Witch, and myriad other Marvel heroes and villains.

He's most famous for being responsible for the demise of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's marriage, too. Indeed, in the incredibly divisive 2000s comic story 'Spider-Man: One More Day', Mephisto made a deal with the pair to save Aunt May's life in exchange for the formal union of their love, which infuriated long-time fans of the webslinger.

Abilities wise, Mephisto is unsurprisingly one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. He possesses all of the usual superhuman powers, but it's his ability to shapeshift, foresee events before they transpire, and prey on people's biggest fears and/or their trauma that makes him such a threat.

It's the latter of those skills, coupled with his vast magical powers, that enables him to warp reality, and to manipulate people and bargain with them for something they want. Usually, the trade-off is the other individual's soul, which Mephisto takes ownership of once a deal is formally agreed.

Okay, so what's the deal with him first appearing in Ironheart? He's the individual who rescues Parker Robbins after the latter and Cousin John's unsuccessful break-in at the home of Parker's dad. Then, he convinces Parker to strike a deal: Mephisto will gift him a dark magic-infused hooded cloak – so Parker can commit petty crimes and make himself rich – in exchange for Parker's soul.

Who dies in Ironheart?

Ironheart performs the rare feat of bringing someone back from the dead (Image credit: Marvel Studios/Disney+)

Nobody. The eponymous hero survives, as do Anthony Ramos' villain in Parker Robbins/The Hood and Alden Ehrenreich's secondary antagonist Zeke Stane.

In fact, Ironheart pulls a reverse Uno card, and brings someone back from the dead. After she defeats The Hood by taking away the source of his powers (aka his cloak), Riri heads for the exit of Desperito's, aka the dilapidated pizza restaurant that The Hood turned into his hideout.

On the way, though, she bumps into Mephisto, who cajoles her into becoming his next victim. Mephisto, whose true form can be seen in a easily-missed shot when he taps a teaspoon on the side of a cup of coffee during this lengthy one-on-one chat, makes a deal with Riri to revive Natalie Washington (Lyric Ross). Remember, Natalie is Riri's best friend, who was killed in a drive-by shooting years ago, and who N.A.T.A.L.I.E, the artificial intelligence Riri creates, is based on.

In return, Mephisto gets Riri's soul. Indeed, after Riri shakes hands with Mephisto, we're privy to a highly emotional reunion between Riri and the reborn Natalie. However, as the pair hug, Riri's right forearm gets covered by the same fire-esque skin markings that adorned Parker's body every time he used his cloak and/or powers.

With Riri's soul now seemingly bound to Mephisto, it'll be fascinating to see when she realizes this is the case, and if her and/or Natalie sacrifice the latter's second chance at life to free Riri of the pact that this flawed hero has made.

Does Ironheart have a mid-credits or post-credits scene?

Parker Robbins wearing his hooded cloak with its hood up in Ironheart

What are you up to, Parker? (Image credit: Marvel Studios/Disney+)

Yes and no. Ironheart has a mid-credits stinger, but there's no end-credits scene to stick around for.

Where the former is concerned, we see the now-cloakless Parker visit Stanton's. That's the confectionary shop that's a front for the Stanton family, who deal with the mystical and the occult.

Anyway, upon entering the store, Parker is greeted by Zelma Stanton (read my Ironheart cast and character guide for more on her), who rattles off the welcome spiel we first heard in episode 4. Parker, though, immediately sees through Zelma's facade, and informs her that he knows about the stuff in the back – i.e., the magical trinkets and knowledge in the Stantons' possession. Parker then tells Zelma he's looking for someone more "experienced" and "supreme" than she is before the screen cuts to black.

Clearly, Parker is interested in finding one of two individuals: Stephen Strange, aka Doctor Strange, or the current Sorcerer Supreme/Master of the Mystic Arts in MCU fan-favorite Wong. Considering that Strange is off-world dealing with the fallout from Doctor Strange 2, I suspect Parker wants to find Wong to learn more about magic. Will it be for the right reasons because he's turned over a new leaf in his life, or does he seek more knowledge of dark magic in order to exact revenge on Riri and Mephisto? Who knows – but this isn't the last we've seen of Parker.

Will there be a second season of Ironheart?

Riri Williams levitating in her armored suit in Joe's underground bunker in Ironheart

I'd be surprised if Ironheart gets a second season (Image credit: Marvel Studios/Disney+)

We don't know. Unlike their big-screen offerings – read my articles on how to watch the Marvel movies in order and the best Marvel movies while you're here – Marvel rarely tells us if a show's lead character will return in a second season once its final end credits sequence has rolled. The only time I can remember the comic giant doing so was with season 1 of Loki, with a mid-credits stinger stating "Loki will return in season 2".

The Tom Hiddleston-starring series aside, Marvel has only renewed three other shows: Daredevil: Born Again, whose second season is currently in development, and animated offerings Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and What If...?. The former's sophomore season is also in active development, while the latter ran for three seasons between 2022 and 2024.

The chances of Ironheart season 2 being greenlit, then, aren't too high. Sure, its 86% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes suggest it should be, but its mixed audience rating indicates that general viewers wouldn't be devastated if a second season isn't forthcoming.

In my view, it's far more likely that Williams, Robbins, and/or Mephisto will show up in other MCU projects. Williams could be part of the cast for Marvel's long-rumored Young Avengers project. Based on Ironheart's mid-credits scene, Robbins could show up in another rumored Disney+ show called Strange Academy, which could star Benedict Wong's Sorcerer Supreme and explore the Mystic Arts in more detail. As for Mephisto, given his shared history with Spider-Man, would it be too much to ask for a cameo in Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Probably, but stranger things have happened.

There’s nothing quite like live sport. Globally, over half a billion (571 million) people tuned in to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Demand for live sports is showing no signs of slowing. But throughout the entire sporting industry, from the field of play to the IT infrastructure beaming the events live to your living room, nothing stands still for long. For athletes and behind-the-scenes technicians alike, innovation is king.

In live sports broadcasting, the next innovation on the horizon revolves around photons and transmitting data at the speed of light. As data demand grows exponentially and current network infrastructure struggles under growing pressure and increasing demand, the broadcast industry must look toward All-Photonics Networks (APNs) to deliver the future of live broadcast.

The challenges facing the future of live broadcasting

The industry’s current infrastructure is struggling to deal with the increasing demand for media production. While technology has developed at an electrifying rate, the infrastructure we rely on to deliver media has not. Take, for example, the ongoing AI boom. There’s no doubt that AI will significantly add to video production network loads, but our current networks were not built with AI in mind. This isn’t sustainable.

As such, producing high-quality live broadcasts is becoming increasingly challenging. Couple this with skilled media professionals typically residing in urban areas and it quickly becomes apparent that delivering live content, like sports, that takes place in remote locations is not only becoming trickier, but more expensive.

So, the live broadcast industry, including live sports, is faced with a challenging question. How can the growing demand for engaging, live content be delivered without escalating costs or compromising on quality? The answer is All-Photonics Networks. Rather than using electrons, APNs utilize photons to transmit data. In doing so, APNs consume less power, facilitate higher quality and capacity data transfers, all with less delay.

The future is remote

As the demand for high-quality, live content continues to grow and the traditional broadcasting infrastructure struggles to keep up, the next step in overcoming these challenges lies in transforming how media production is managed, remotely and with greater efficiency.

Currently, live broadcasting requires a significant in-person presence. Even for the world’s largest events, bringing the world’s best talent to remote locations can be a challenge. Not to mention expensive. But the need to be there, in person, is only dictated by technological restraints. APNs break free of this restraint.

Rather than needing to be in a broadcast van in or outside the venue, media operators can work remotely. APNs enable media production operators to access and control production resources as if they are on-site. This also allows broadcasters to stream more events from lower leagues or remote locations, increasing choice and accessibility for fans.

APNs offer low-latency, high-bandwidth connections that utilize photonics. By using photons, rather than electrons, to transmit data, this infrastructure supports the remote control of production resources, enabling seamless, real-time editing and switching. The technology equally supports resource sharing across networks, allowing broadcasters to access and allocate production assets efficiently.

By enabling remote work, All-Photonics Networks (APNs) can help address the growing skills gap in live sports broadcasting. Research shows that over half of professionals in the TV industry believe skills-related challenges have worsened in recent years. APNs provide a solution by allowing technicians to work from anywhere, breaking geographic barriers and tapping into a global talent pool.

This flexibility not only eases the skills shortage but also promotes diversity and inclusion, as it opens up opportunities for professionals from different regions and backgrounds to contribute to high-profile events.

The financial and environmental case for APNs

Not only does the shift to remote work bring operational advantages, but it also presents significant financial and environmental benefits, which are crucial as the sports industry looks for ways to optimize costs and reduce its environmental impact. Expanded coverage doesn't require extra travel or personnel, removing cost barriers that have long limited what fans can watch.

In elite-level sports, money talks. Whether it's signing top talent for a football team or developing a race-winning car in motorsport, the power of the dollar is evident throughout the industry. And the same is true when assessing the value of updating or overhauling infrastructure. There must be a financial benefit.

APNs will revolutionize cost efficiency. Compared to electron-based infrastructure, APNs will reduce both CapEx and OpEx by minimizing on-site infrastructure and personnel needs. Furthermore, APNs will be more resilient than current systems, not only will they facilitate uninterrupted broadcasts, it will also mean less is spent on repairs and fixes. This is because Photonics Networks are more durable and reliable, making them ideal for even the most challenging conditions.

And equally, like many other industries, the live broadcast sector is undergoing sustainable transitions. Through APNs, broadcasters will have access to more energy-efficient infrastructure that optimizes networking usage and ultimately reduces the broadcasters' carbon footprint.

While viewers may be more familiar with innovation on the pitch, racetrack, or field of play, APNs highlight that it is equally within the infrastructure and behind the scenes of live sports broadcasting that innovative new technologies are set to be revolutionary. Now, as broadcasters question how the growing demand for engaging, live content can be delivered without escalating costs or compromising on quality, it’s increasingly apparent that the answer is racing toward them, at the speed of light.

2023 was the breakout year of AI and since then it’s been going from strength to strength. It’s seen as the solution to everything from productivity and a skills gap to fixing the NHS, with Tony Blair calling for AI doctors and chatbots to ‘save’ the health service.

There has been an explosive growth of generative AI with most companies using it in at least one of their business functions. It’s gone from being a subject discussed by tech teams to something regularly mentioned in the boardroom.

According to a survey of C-suite executives, 40 percent say their companies will increase their investment in AI tools overall.

And whilst there is no doubt AI is developing in accuracy, I do not believe it can replace humans in every single area and one in particular – emotional intelligence.

Over-reliance on AI in business

Over-reliance on AI in business risks removing that vital input from key decision making and team building and runs the risk of making some areas of leadership redundant – at significant cost.

The costs might not immediately show up on a PNL spreadsheet, but they will be felt in other areas where it might not be so easy to quantify.

AI is a useful tool, but it's just that - a tool and it cannot replace that ‘gut feeling’ or connection that a great leader of any team has. That’s the magic which turns a group of disparate people into a team – the sum of which is greater than its parts.

My concern is that we need to strike the right balance between our use of technology and building and developing our own skills. If all we do is put resources into AI at the expense of other training and development, or replace people with machines, we will be the worse for it.

In short, I worry that people will become reliant on AI and could lose that innate human element that we bring to leadership and team building.

Leaders have understanding and insights

Leaders have understanding and insights built over many years which cannot be replaced by data or machines. If AI cannot find the answers to a question, it can make things up. Look at the infamous court case in America which made headlines in May 2023 when a law firm, Levidow, Levidow & Oberman got caught citing fake cases generated by ChatGPT.

The ‘soft skills’ which good leaders at all levels have make the difference between a good leader and a great leader can’t be replaced by software. These personal qualities enable people to interact effectively and successfully with others: communication, teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability – not to mention empathy.

These should be highly valued in the workplace, and especially by leaders, as they contribute to improved teamwork, productivity and overall job satisfaction.

My experience of working in elite sports has shown me that humans cannot just be replaced by technology, no matter how smart.

AI has a role to play

AI has a role to play in any team, particularly with more basic tasks of information gathering or data analysis, but it cannot replace the power of a human connection.

An emotionally intelligent leader goes beyond the numbers and knows their team. AI can’t pick up that real emotional response, and it can't read people like humans do.

It’s ‘machine learning’ for a reason – it uses whatever data you pump into it but there are just some cues and traits which cannot be quantified and that’s what cannot be replaced.

We've used technology and data in sport for a long time; elite sports is incredibly data driven. We've got all the information that says the players should train at this point because they are due to pull a hamstring or develop another injury or over train.

And whilst it's useful to have that information, it should be used as a guide.

I've seen many top-level coaches when the sports scientists are running over, saying ‘we need to stop training now.’

But the coach looks at the players and can see that the players can continue for another ten minutes, and he’s pushed the players through.

The data could also get it wrong and put players at risk by pushing them too much whereas a coach will see if his players look physically fatigued and need to stop training early.

Costs of bad investment

The costs of misreading that at elite sports level go beyond the investment in a machine: we’re talking millions of pounds worth of players or the opportunity to achieve a lifetime goal of a medal on the world stage.

And even when Olympic golds aren’t in the picture, the impact of a toxic working environment is felt not only in the lower productivity or staff turnover but in more personal impacts on someone’s health and sense of value.

This knowledge and consequent decision making comes from the human understanding of people. In my 25 years’ of working in both a team and in a leadership role in sports I have yet to see a coach who has got that wrong.

Because we’ve used data in sports for so many years I think it provides a lesson for other areas on how we can use AI: as a way of gathering data, of making predictions or analysing patterns but only as a tool to help inform our own human-driven intelligence.

To rely on AI wholly would be a mistake: nothing can replace that human intelligence.

We've compiled a list of the best data visualization tools and the best business intelligence platforms.
